Have You Seen This Man?
If you have then you were probably one of
the lucky teams that got some fantastic action shots put
up on the Website. Richard Reeve is the clubs unofficial
photographer who spent much of his own time wandering
around to different grounds on the weekend taking some
great action shots. Many are stored under our gallery
under 2009 Other so check them out.
And to Richard a very big thank you from the club.

CUP WINNERS
Congratulations to the Mens Friars for
winning the Presidents Cup on Saturday. Goals to Jacco
Kerstens and Ben Watson (2) secured a 3-0 victory against
Yarra Valley in atrocious windy conditions. This adds to
their Runners Up trophy they secured the previous week and
will give them a lot to look forward to as they move up to
Division 5 next season. Unfortunately our Ladies Lyrebirds
didn't fare so well in their final loosing 0-6 to Berwick.
Last Day of
the Green"
Monbulk SC celebrated the
"Last Day of the Green" with a Gala Day on Saturday 12th
Sept. This was the last time games were played on the
grass at Monbulk before the pitch will be changed to the
artificial surface over summer. Three matches were played
and the benefits of the planned merger showed already with
a very entertaining Junior match starting the proceedings.
The U11 FFV Champions,
the Rascals, had put out the challenge to a mixed
Sherbrooke Junior team. The "Jelly Beans", so named
because it consisted mostly of U12 players, took an early
2-0 lead. Slowly the Rascals pegged them back, and it
stayed 2-2 until a few minutes before the end when the
"Jelly Beans" scored again and won the game deservedly,
3-2.
Next up the Monbulk
Women's teams augmented with Sherbrooke juniors and
Monbulk men presented the crowd with some entertaining
football. Some of the juniors were half the size of the
seniors, but they all had a go at getting the ball, and
being part of the action. The great spirit of the game was
a credit to the Monbulk seniors.
And lastly, as the major
event of the day, the "Dutchies" vs "Pommies" annual
grudge match. The actual nationalities of the players
could have been in doubt, but the Clogwogs were
resplendent in their Orange, and the Pommies were proudly
wearing their national teams colours. Spurred on by avid
barracking from the sidelines, players double the age of
some of their teammates, showed that ancient tree climbing
boots could still dig deep in the real grass of Monbulk.
As a Dutchman writing this report, I can say that the
result didn't really matter, but rest assured that the
individual actions were discussed long into the night at
the Monbulk rooms.
The Sherbrooke Juniors SC
was definitely part of this joint effort, and the day was
a great success

RESULTS 5th/6th September
The season has finished with some outstanding
performances from some of our Junior teams. Our U14 Dragons
were faced with the daunting task of playing the top team
Eastern Lions in their last match and needing at laest a
draw to win promotion and the Runners up medal for C Grade
East. They clinched a memorable 1-0 victory when Ryan Scott
hit home a free kick securing a B Grade berth next year. At
the other end of the ground his big brother Geordie was
sweeping superbly in the U18 Pythons clash with league
contenders Heidleburg on a very ordinary pitch. The game
started with the Pythons having only 10 players and being
reduced to 9 after 30 minutes due to one player having to
leave early. The Boys played outstanding soccer and in the
first 10 minutes saw the Heidleburg keeper and the upright
stop 3 certain goals. Despite this the boys pressed forward
eventually being rewarded with two goals before half time.
In the second half Heidleburg came out firing and threw
everything at the Pythons and eventually drew level
with persistent pressure resulting in an unfortunate penalty
and mix up at the back. The Pythons instead of flagging
defeat somehow seemed to lift their game and came back with
vigour and effort and forced several opportunities one of
which they capitilized on with 20 minutes to go. They
defended resolutely for that twenty minutes and run out
worthy 3-2 winners. There were 9 best on ground players in
what can only be described as leaving the best to last.
Undoubtably the best performance of the year for this team.
U13 Bears
After a big loss in their
first round encounter, the Sherbrooke Rangers Under 13 Bears
were looking forward to a return bout with the highly-rated
Oakleigh at Menzies Creek. Both sides began strongly, with
Oakleigh having the better of territory. Big, fast and
physical players were a feature of the Oakleigh side, and
the Bears defensive line had their work cut out keeping them
at bay. Paul Torsello, Tim Tubbs, Sebastian Scmuecke-Mueller
and Adam Doolan were courageous in their work, marking
closely with Adam sticking to Oakleigh’s main striker like
determined glue. Gradually Oakleigh became frustrated and
soon earnt the referee’s ire with a string of free
kicks going Sherbrooke’s way, including a yellow card for
goal keeper harassment. Sherbrooke were holding their own in
midfield, with Nic Broomhead and Joel Turpin often winning
the ball and feeding forward, whilst Jonathan Marshall and
Ben Saar were constantly harrying the opposition and
disrupting their flow. Up front Liam Stauber, Kyle and Max
Rechner began to make some yards and Oakleigh now knew they
were in for a tough match. 0-0 at halftime was a fair
indication of the contest, and then the Bears began to have
the better of the play. After some good work to build
pressure Joel was fouled in the box after a dangerous
corner, and Michael Park stepped up to coolly slot the ball
beneath the diving keeper. Oakleigh renewed their attack,
becoming even more physical on the ball, and a high cross
found a leaping head for a well-taken equaliser. With ten
minutes to go tensions were running high, and another
Oakleigh foul just outside the box saw Michael line up for
the set piece shot. His strike over the wall was blocked by
the keeper, but unable to control the ball he could only
watch as Max darted in and deposited the ball into the net
from a sharp angle. As the clock ran down there were some
anxious moments, but with desperate defence - and canny work
from second half keeper Ben - Sherbrooke held on for a
well-deserved 2-1 victory. The combination between the boys
really flourished in the second half of the season, and with
wins or draws against all but one side (look out next year
Bulleen!) things look promising for the Bears for the 2010
season. (Player of the match – Adam Doolan for an excellent
defensive display against quality opposition)
U11 Rascals
The U11 Rascals
finished their first FFV season as Champions of their
Division, "East Joeys Orange". The 78 goals scored and 2
against, showed both the defensive and offensive skills of
the team. As their very proud coach, Hans Damen contributes
their win to fantastic training efforts and a beautiful team
spirit. Coaches from other teams in the FFV competition
have remarked several times during the season how the
Rascals stood out because of their joy in playing.
Obviously winning has helped a lot in that respect. With
most players being comfortable in multiple positions the
passing game has been the Rascals strong point. Fitness and
skill levels improved during the season. All players trained
and played for their Saturday teams as well as for the
Rascals, and they are as keen at the end of the season as
they were at the start. As far as the Rascals are concerned
they don't want it to end either. One more 'exhibition
game' during "Monbulk's Last Day On The Green" at 1pm on Sat
Sept 12th where the Rascals have challenged the U12's, and
then the Warrnambool 7 a side tournament to come. What a
season !!! Go Rascals!!!!

End of Year for VCSA Juniors
The pouring rain greeted the final round for
all our Saturday Junior teams and has ended with some
wonderful results for our teams. One of the most note worthy
of finishes was in the U11 league where Sherbrooke finished
1st, 2nd and 3rd with only one point and goal difference
separating the teams. The Rockets on 31 points pipped The
Rebels by goal difference whilst the Raiders came home just
one point shy on 30 points. I reckon the VCSA State team in
three years may be the Best of Sherbrooke if they continue
in this fashion. In the U12's our Jackeroos picked up a
Runners up medal as did our Heartbreakers the U17 Panthers
who have finally used all their combined talent that has
promised so much for the past 4 years and brought home some
silverware. The U13 Power have come home with a wet sail to
get back to back Winners medals in a very even league. With
only a week to go in the Mens competition Both Div1 Forest
and Div 6 Friars need to win their last match to get a
runners up medal and Div 4 Knights and Div 5 Arrows will win
championship medals if they win their last match.
U9 Hornets
The last match of the season saw the Under 9 Hornets travel
to North Blackburn to play against the Panthers, the only
team to inflict a defeat on the Hornets all year. The boys
were determined to avenge the previous 4-3 loss and knew
they were in for a tough game if they were to do so. In
what was windy and rainy conditions the Hornets displayed
the great teamwork they have developed throughout this
year. There were a few first half chances to Dylan Ireland
& Joseph Bencs, but the Panthers keeper managed to deflect
everything. At the other end Quinn Helmore was also having
to do some good work to keep the Panthers scoreless. No
score at half time. The Hornets came out blazing in the
second half and Aaron Grenda managed to put two goals past
the Panthers keeper. A handball in the penalty zone saw
Aaron line up to take the Hornets first penalty of the year;
however he could not convert, with the keeper saving it.
Will Findlay and Tyler Hauler were magnificent in defence,
double teaming to perfection to not allow the Panthers
striker (who kicked four against us last time) any space on
the ball. A great team effort by all players to come away
with a win in our final game against our toughest
competition. The Hornets finished the season with 14 wins,
1 draw and 1 loss - I'm sure the kids enjoyed everygame and
as the coach I'm very proud of their achievements and
progress and look forward to next year already.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Donvale
Cannons
3-0 – P. Strajner
2, S. Bahar
In the latest round of Division 1 matches the
Forest came up against Donvale Cannons. The boys knew they
were up for a tough game as their opponents had proven stiff
competition for all teams this season. They could have got
off to a flyer when Sy Bahar missed an early chance to score
but he shot wide. The boys looked flowing and fluent from
the word go and played some excellent football. However they
could have gone behind but for a few crucial saves by keeper
Dave Milne. They did take the lead after about 25 minutes
when top scorer Pete Strajner capitalized on some hesitant
defending to slot past the despairing Cannons keeper. It was
2-0 soon after when an excellent long ball from Ryan Cassidy
was swooped on by Strajner to score his and the teams 2nd
goal. Several chances came and went as they continued to
dominate proceedings. Despite their best efforts the score
remained 2-0 at halftime with all the play going the Forest
way. The second half was to prove a very similar story to
the first with the Forest dominating in all areas of the
pitch. All players stuck to their job well in yet another
excellent all round team performance. They came close on a
number of occasions most notably when Strajner had a shot
come back off the post denying him his hat trick, but with
10 minutes to go they finally got a deserved 3rd
goal when Shaun Grant beat his man down the left and crossed
for Bahar to tap in from close range. They were lucky not to
concede right neat the end when the Cannons player missed a
guilt edged chance but it would have proven only a
consolation as the Forest boys ran out comfortable 3-0
winners. In the final game of the season the Forest come up
against Glen Eira Phoenix who despite already being
relegated will still no doubt offer stiff competition for the boys

RESULTS 22nd/23rd August
U13 Pumas
The U13 Pumas faced up to two time league champions Knox at
Wandin on Saturday with the hope of improving the 1-1 result
from earlier this season. In probably the best all around
team performance of the season they came away well deserved
1-0 winners. With team positions thrown into a little
turmoil this week the players responded with several having
their best games of the season. Mikayla Newman at left back,
Ash Barnes at centre back and Rohan Gilbert all responded to
their positional changes with their best personal games for
the season. Adam Doolan found himself in the unusual
position of midfield and besides playing an excellent
defensive role set up the goal when the ball bounced high in
front of the keeper and pressure from Michael Parkes and
Justin Lowe on the keeper gave Michael the chance to glance
the header into the net. With Tim Tubbs blossoming this
season as an overlapping left midfielder the team has a new
dimension. Coupled with the usual outstanding performances
of Brodie, Liam and Paul the great tackling of Fletch and
the last minute diving save of Ahren in goal the Pumas not
only outplayed the opposition which has occurred often this
season they came away with a well deserved result.
U13 Bears
After some good form in recent weeks the U13 Sherbrooke
Bears started slowly against Booroondara at home, with Ben
Saar called on to make a couple of early saves. The Bears
showed the benefit of hard work, however, with excellent
defence and some slick passing soon creating opportunites.
Sebastain Schmuecke –Mueller was proving a commanding
presence in the centre back, with Paul Torsello, Adam Doolan
and Kyle also having strong matches. Many of the Bears
players have really grown in confidence as the season
progressed, and it showed as they were able to repel the
Boorondara attacks whilst building field position. Some
chances were made, with Nic Broomhead just putting one over
the crossbar from long range and Michael Park, Max Rechner
and Liam Stauber threatening with some good raids. An
entertaining match was 0-0 at halftime, however, and in the
second half it was Boorondara who made the most of their
opportunity, an excellent cross being skilfully deflected
into the net past second-half goalie Michael. In the first
half of the season the Bears may have wilted at this point,
but showing resolve and great composure they were able to
work their way back into the match, despite losing Liam
Stauber with an injury just after conceding the goal.
Jonathan, Kyle and Tim all worked particularly hard to bring
the ball forward and control the centre, with Tim’s speed
proving crucial as he outpaced larger opposition. Joel
Turpin and Nic began to make a lot of space down the left
with some good combination, but it was Max Rechner on the
right who scored a deserved equaliser after sustained
Sherbrooke pressure and some good work from Ben Saar,
turning the ball and the defence inside out in the box
before slamming home his third score in the past fortnight.
At 1-1 the Bears had the momentum, and an excellent corner
from Nic and a good pass to Joel saw him with enough space
to add Sherbrooke’s second goal with a clinical finish. All
round it was one of the best performances of the season,
particularly coming back from a goal down, with all the
players to be congratulated for their efforts. Player of the
match - Kyle.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Eastern United
4-0 – J.
Woischuk 2, R. Hrabal, S. Grant
In the latest round of Division 1 matches the Forest came up
against bogey side Eastern United. They had lost the
previous 3 encounters against Eastern so were looking to get
one back on their nemesis. They started brightly and
dominated the early proceedings. Jordan Scott was unlucky
when his long range shot came back off the crossbar and it
was looking like being another frustrating day for the boys
when they got a penalty soon after but Shaun Grant’s shot
was well saved by the Eastern keeper. Despite this they
continued to pile on constant pressure and were rewarded
with a goal just before the half time break. A low driven
corner by Ryan Cassidy was flicked home at the near post by
Josh Woischuk to put the Forest deservedly ahead. The second
half was a very similar story to the first with the Forest
dominating in all areas of the pitch. They came close on a
number of occasions early in the half as their constant
rotations were proving too much for the Eastern player’s
fitness. They finally doubled their advantage when a flowing
move down the left found Grant and his cross was finished
brilliantly by Radek Hrabal. The Forest were all over
Eastern at this point and it was no surprise when Woischuk
pounced on some hesitant defending to make it 3-0 soon
after. Sy Bahar had a chance to score a fourth but was
brought down in the box which resulted in another penalty.
This time Frank Disario stepped up but he shot straight at
the keeper. However it was 4-0 not long after when Grant out
jumped the Eastern defense from a Woischuk corner to head
home. A comprehensive win for the boys who continue to put
pressure on those teams above them in the race for the
title. Next up is Don vale Cannons who will be a tough test
for the boys.
Melbourne to Ayers Rock
Men in tights oops I mean men on bikes seen streaking around
the hills. If seen give them wide berth and allow them
to continue on their merry biking way….. Now all
joking aside the Sherbrooke Rangers Junior Soccer Club is
EXTREMELY proud to be supporting two of our coaches in their
efforts to bike ride from Federation Square to Uluru (or
Ayers Rock for those of us born before the eighties).
Both Peter Doonan (U13 Power Coach) and Adam Pater (U8
Stingers Coach) are in serious training for this arduous
bike ride that will start on August the 30th from
Federation square and hopefully be completed at Uluru 10
days later!!!! (That’s just shy of 2000kms folks – and I
didn't put on an extra zero). The reason for this heroic
(should this read mad) endeavor is to raise money for an
extremely worthy organization – The Cancer Council.
All of us have been either touched directly or indirectly by
someone who has been challenged by this terrible disease.
Funds raised will go to funding cancer research and
assisting those in need. The club will be following Peters
and Adams progress via a link to a daily updated blog. The
blog will highlight the trials and tribulations of never
ending hills, busted tyres, blisters etc to the highs of
stunning scenery, coasting down a hill, beautiful sunsets in
the desert and all the rest. The Sherbrooke Rangers will be
assisting by tin rattling at all our canteens in the
weekends leading up to the start of the ride. We will
also be able to accept donations and write receipts for tax
deductible purposes at all our canteens. For those that
prefer you will be able to link directly to the Cancer
council website via
www.rideforcancer.com.au in the next few days so
that you can make donations by credit card.
Peter and Adam all the very best!!!

RESULTS 15th/16th August
U12 Jets
Under 12 Jets played second placed North
Caulfield on Sunday morning at Baynes Park. After losing 4-0
against Caulfield the first time round the Jets knew they
would be in for a hard game. Conditions were wet and muddy
and play was tough. Noah, Ramon and Callum played courageous
roles in defending while goalkeeper Luca made some
spectacular saves. Eventually the pressure gave way to a
goal as North Caulfield went up by a goal in the first half.
In the second half the Jets held their positions well and
passed the ball around and matched Caulfield. Sherbrooke had
many chances to level the game as the ball skidded from one
end to the other. The game was close, tense and very
exciting and eventually the pressure by the Jets led to a
goal scored by Brandon Abela. The final score was 1-1
which is an excellent result by the Jets who continue to
show great promise as a developing team.
Under13
Bears
On a day that showcased the worst of Melbourne’s weather
the Under 13 Sherbrooke Bears were away against Whitehorse.
With torrential rain and a howling gale at their backs in
the first half, the Bears did well to score a goal through
Max Rechner, incisive as ever on the right wing, with the
conditions making co-ordinated play difficult. In the second
half the rain held off although the wind remained, and the
Bears combinations clicked in attack. Michael Park added a
second goal after good lead up work from Liam Stauber, and
then Joel Turpin sent one past the keeper from just outside
the box after dribbling through the Whitehorse defence. Max
Rechner scored his second , capitalising on an excellent
through ball to outpace the defence then dribble around the
advancing keeper before converting from an acute angle.
Other highlights included Ben Saars’ performance in goal,
proving safe in tricky and treacherous conditions with a
swirling ball, whilst Sebastian Schmuecke-Mueller was player
of the match for an unstinting and solid defensive effort
and a cameo in goal in the final minutes. Well done Bears
for braving the elements and securing a solid 4-0 win.
The Michael Park Show
The Under 13 Sherbrooke Bears returned to the winner’s list
with a strong performance at Menzies Creek against North
Caulfield. Despite dominating the first half, with some near
misses and a dubious non-penalty in the box, the Bears went
into the break down 0-1 after a goal right on halftime
against the run of play. An early penalty in the box in the
second stanza saw Michael Park neatly convert to equalise,
and then shortly afterwards he earnt another free just
outside the box. Bending the ball over the wall and past the
despairing keeper, it was suddenly 2-1 to the Bears and the
momentum was all theirs. Excellent performances all round,
expecially from Cossy Beecham, Paul Torsello and Sebastian
at the back and some fluid teamwork up front between Joel
Turpin, Liam Stauber and Max Rechner kept the pressure on.
Just outside the box again, Michael then scored his third of
the day and probably the goal of the season. Just outside
the box and with the ball on his right foot and back to the
defence, the ball was juggled at least three times and then
flicked up for a left foot around the corner strike – still
facing the wrong way - that lobbed high in the air and then
sailed down like a descending coconut past the gobsmacked
keeper and into the net. Shortly afterwards another indirect
penalty was dispatched with a certain inevitability into the
net for a fourth goal by….Michael. Final score 4-1 and an
excellent reward for the team after much improved
performances in recent weeks, including draws against league
leader Ashburton and a strong Richmond side.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Dandy Casuals
2-1 – S. Grant, P. Strajner
In a vitally important game for the Forest they came up
against lowly placed Dandy Casuals. In order to keep their
season on track they couldn’t settle for anything less than
3 points from this one. They started brightly on an
excellent pitch and knocked the ball around well. Their
passing and movement was in full flow from the first whistle
as they continuously created chances to open the scoring.
Top scorer Pete Strajner came close a couple of times early
once from a Shaun Grant cross and once from a flowing move
down the right involving both Ryan Cassidy and Josh Woischuk.
The Forest were lucky however to not go behind and relied on
some dogged defending by trio Rob Wynne, Dave Hill, Bernie
Herrok and some good saves by keeper Dave Milne. The boys
did go ahead with 30 minutes gone when Cassidy was brought
down in the box for a blatant penalty. Grant converted the
spot kick seeing his shot squeeze under the body of the
despairing Dandy keeper. Soon after Dandy were level though
as they scored a nicely taken free kick from just outside
the box. This didn’t faze the Forest boys who continued to
play attacking football and were rewarded for their efforts
as another flowing passing move through the midfield and a
nice through ball by Woischuk found Strajner who hammered
the ball home. 2-1 at halftime with the Forest looking the
goods for the desired result. The second half was a very
similar story to the first with the Forest dominating in all
areas of the pitch. Keeper Milne was hardly called upon at
all for the entire half as all the players stuck to their
jobs well. Central midfield trio Frank Disario, Pierre
Philippeau and Jordan Scott were winning every challenge as
Grant and Herrok continued to terrorize the Dandy defense
down the wings. They came agonizingly close on several
occasions with a Grant free kick going just over, Strajner
forcing several saves out of the Dandy keeper and Woischuk
seeing a close range shot cannon back off the crossbar.
Despite not adding to their advantage the boys ran out
comfortable 2-1 winners and can be very happy with their all
round team performance. Next up is bogie team Eastern United
who has had the wood over the boys in their recent games.
The boys will be determined to get one back on their rivals
and continue their push for a possible title.

as well as committee persons to thank them for all their
efforts for the season. There will be a meal and drinks
provided and we will have a guest speaker Chris Bambridge.
Chris is a former FIFA referee and besides refereeing World
Cup matches has had the honour of refereeing an Olympic Gold
Medal Final. It will be held at Menzies Creek Reserve
Clubrooms at 7.00pm on Friday 21st August.
RESULTS 8th/9th August
U18 Sparks
Seventh placed Sherbrooke under 18 Sparks played second
place Boroondra eagles at east Wandin reserve. As soon as that
whistle blew the fast paced game started with Sherbrooke
putting pressure against their more fancied opponents. In a
tight first half Boroondara held a slim lead of 1-0 but scored
in the final seconds of the first half to make it 2-0. In the
second half the Sparx had most of the attack and were finally
rewarded with a goal scored by Natalie Allan. The final score
was 3-1 in favour of Boroondara but the girls from the Sparx
team should be proud of their effort against one of the best
teams in the competition. Best players: Emily Scott,
Natalie Allan, Kara Dunster, Georgia Cramer and Tara
Frankcombe.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Berwick United
2-2 – P. Strajner 2
In the latest round of matches the Forest
came up against 5th placed Berwick who in the past
had always proved a difficult opponent for the boys. After a
disappointing defeat to Knox the week before they were out to
prove a point in this match. The boys started positively and
controlled the early proceedings. However a laps in
concentration at the back resulted in them falling behind
after 10 minutes. The game became heated after this with
several crunching tackles being thrown in. Several players on
both sides were lucky to escape reprimand by the referee as
the game threatened to get out of control. Amongst all that
was happening off the ball Berwick were gifted a penalty soon
after taking the lead which was converted. 2-0 down now and
the boys had their backs to the wall. To their credit they
continued to play the better football and were rewarded for
their efforts when a pin point Shaun Grant cross from the left
found Pete Strajner to head home well. They went close a few
times after this but the score remained 2- 1 at halftime with
the Forest carrying all the momentum into the 2nd
half. The second half kicked off exactly where the first ended
with the Forest dominating proceedings. The whole team was
giving their all with Frank Disario a commanding presence in
the middle of the park. They were awarded for their dominance
midway through the half when a long ball by Grant found the
run of Strajner who headed home over the onrushing Berwick
keeper. 2-2 now and the boys continued to press forward to
score the winning goal. They were denied the lead with 10
minutes to go when Grant struck a long range free kick into
the net but the referee had blown for an infringement in the
box. Some close calls right near the end of the game almost
won the game for the Forest but it wasn’t to be as the game
ended in a 2-2 draw. The effort of all players was commendable
as they fought back from 2-0 down to salvage at least a draw
out of a hard fought encounter. Next up is Dandy Casuals who
are capable of beating anybody on their day, another tough
test for the Forest boys!!

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Knox Churches Force
0-1
In the latest round of matches the Forest came up against 3rd
placed and rival Knox in what could prove to be a season
defining game for both clubs. A win would see the boys take
a firm grip of 2nd place but a loss would see
them fall behind Knox into 3rd place. The boys
started positively with confidence and tried to assert
themselves on the contest. Knox had set out to play a very
defensive style of game looking to negate the influence of
the Forest’s potent strike force. This was proving difficult
for the boys to break down as they struggled to create any
clear chances. They had some positive spells though in the
first half with Marty Quaye and Josh Woischuk looking
brightest. 0-0 at the break with neither team really taking
a grip on the game and no real clear chances created. The
second half was to prove a very similar scenario with Knox’s
rock solid defense closing the door on any forward thrust
the Forest could conjure up. The boys held firm also in
their defense with Robbie Wynne again having a solid game at
sweeper. However Knox did manage to break the dead lock 15
minutes from time when a corner wasn’t cleared properly and
the ball was hammered home past the despairing grasp of
keeper Dave Milne. This seemed to spark the Forest to life
though and definitely had their best spell of pressure in
the final stages of the match. Sy Bahar came close with a
header near the end but they couldn’t level the score going
down by 1 goal to 0. A disappointing result for the boys who
despite giving their all couldn’t get the desired result.
They will have to pick themselves up for their next match
against Berwick as they look to stay in touch at the top of
the league.

RESULTS JULY 18th/19th
The result of the day was 3-2 with 5 of our
teams achieving this winning margin. Our U17 Panthers
finally gave their parents something to smile about by
actually being on the correct side of a 3-2 result. More
importantly it was against their local rivals Knox. The
surprise of the round was The Friars 3-2 win over our Arrows
in the semi final of the cup. The Arrows dominated the start
of the game but were unable to capitilize in goals and in
fact went 1-0 down when Jacco (One of three who arrived home
from Europe literally hours earlier) scored a good goal
somewhat against the run of play. The Arrows were on
deserved equal terms not to much later when Robbie hammered
a scuffed goal kick from a long way out and caught Jeremy
out of position. The game was very entertaining and some
excellent soccer played on a pitch most of the Senior teams
enjoy playing on. The second half saw the Friars do what
they have done so successfully in the Div 6 comp this season
and that is put up a near impenetrable wall of defense and
catch the opposition on the break. They scored two goals in
the second half in this manner and despite a very late goal
from the Arrows in the dying minutes were able to secure a
very well earned victory and move into the Cup Final against
either Shacs or Yarra Valley. Undoubtably the club boasts
outstanding talent in the U13 year level. The U13 Pumas are
a team that thrive on confidence but lack consistency. On
their day they have beaten every team in their league but
when their confidence is down often struggle to achieve.
Their ability to score quick goals always leaves them in
with a chance but often if they dont get that first goal
their heads drop and positive results are not likely. Work
on their persistence may have started to pay off when today
they came from 0-1 down late in the game and scored an
equalizer against very strong winds and the top team Knox.
In fact that persistence was nearly rewarded with a second
just before the equalizer. The team work has improved
dramatically as the season has progressed and with a little
more self belief I think there will be no easy games for
their opposition in the second half of the season.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Mitcham
Warriors
3-3 – P. Strajner 2, S. Bahar
In the match of the round
the Forest came up against Mitcham Warriors. They welcomed
to the side new signing Rob Wynne and on the back of
Bayswater’s first loss of the season the boys were looking
to consolidate their position in 2nd place while
closing the gap to only 4 points. In windy conditions the
boys started well and on one of the nest pitches they’ve
played on all year knocked the ball around well. They came
close early on a few occasions but failed to break the
deadlock. Keeper Dave Milne made a couple of excellent saves
to keep the score level and finally with another flowing
move down the right and a pin point cross from Dave Disley
the Forest took the lead through a Pete Strajner header.
There lead didn’t last long though and some sloppy defending
from a corner saw the Mitcham striker hammer home the loose
ball. The Forest had the majority of play throughout the
half coming close on several occasions. Shaun Grant,
Strajner and Sy Bahar all came close to scoring while Disley
was unlucky to see a shot come back off the crossbar with
Strajner unfortunately failing to convert the rebound. 1-1
at halftime and the boys knew they were in for a fight to
try and secure all 3 points. They started the second half
well and began controlling the game in all areas of the
pitch. Despite their obvious dominance they still failed to
create any real chances until Grant played in Ryan Cassidy
down the left whose cross was swept home by Strajner from
close range. Again there lead didn’t last long though and a
long throw into the box went through Milne’s hands and
trickled into the net. The Forest were starting to look a
bit shaky and went behind with 10 minutes to go as the
Mitcham striker again found himself in acres of space and he
smashed a shot past the despairing Milne. To the boys credit
though they didn’t let their heads drop and fought the game
out to the end. They were rewarded for their endeavor when a
long free kick from Frank Disario was flicked on by Grant
and headed home by Sy Bahar. They tried in vein to score the
winning goal coming agonizingly close in the very last
minute when a Grant long throw was headed goal bound by
Bahar which the goalie somehow tipped onto the crossbar. 3-3
it finished and the boys will see this as 2 points lost
rather than 1 gained. Next up is Casey City who always
proves to be a tough test for the Forest who cannot settle
for anything less than 3 points if they want to keep their
title aspirations alive!

RESULTS JULY 11/12th
Our Mens Arrows have thrown a cat amongst the
pigeons after humiliating league leaders Western united 5-1 at
Wandin. If Western win their game in hand there will only be a
couple of goals difference between the two teams at the top of
the 5th division. After forfeiting their first two matches and
losing their third they have now won 10 games on the trot. The
inclusion of young guns and sons Tom, Chris, Geordie and Locky
have turned a good team into a near invincible team. With Dads
and sons combining to perfection the result never seemed in
doubt with the only question being how many. Terry Wynne was
outstanding at left back combining with son Chris to give
outstanding penetration down the left whilst I rate Tom
Baldock as one of the best midfielders in the club. His use of
the ball second to none at our club at present. Add this to
the experience through the team and the stepping up of Wayne
and his outstanding courage in goal it is hard to see this
team losing through anything other than complacency. Our
Ladies Kookaburras continued their impressive improvement and
though losing were very competitive in their 0-1 loss at
Berwick. It seems some of those Mums might know what they are
talking about when instructing their children from the
sideline and have taken to the park to prove it.
Saphyrz U15 Girls
Sherbrooke Rangers V Eastern Lions
12th July 2009 at Wandin North Reserve
The Saphyrz began the game against Eastern Lions tentatively,
but when they settled down they played some good soccer. The
best evidence of this was by the number of times that the ball
moved smoothly from defence, through the midfield to provide
our running forwards with opportunities to score. Sherbrooke
had the majority of the play in the first half, with some
courageous play from Ellen, a cool head under pressure from
Madi K, good running from Bridget and Lani in the midfield,
Annabel doing some great ‘grunt work’ through the centre, and
Bronte and Annalise teaming well together up forward. On one
of these occasions a shot at the Eastern Lions goal got away
from the keeper and young Melissa bobbed up to slam it into
the back of the net! We went into ½ time 1-0 ahead, but soon
after the game resumed there was a very unlucky hand ball in
the box and Eastern Lions scored from the penalty spot. From
that point Eastern Lions put in some very good play down the
side to have a couple of good shots, but our defence held
firm. Bridget, Lani and Annabel were really working hard in
the midfield to push the ball through to the forwards and she
provided Annalise with a perfect opportunity and she scored a
goal to put Sherbrooke 2-1 ahead. Minutes later, our captain
‘Boom Boom’ Alexa was lurking outside the box and pounced on a
poor clearance from a corner to put her left foot shot just
over the bar! The Sherbrooke Saphyrz deserved to win the game
2-1 as they were clearly the better team. Well done girls and
I am sure we will hear that famous victory song again before
the end of the season!

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Bayswater
Strikers
1-3 – S. Bahar
In the match of the round the Forest came up
against top side Bayswater Strikers in a massive 6 point game.
The boys were looking to send Co-captain Darryl Scott off in
style as he embarks on his long term holiday around the world.
In tough conditions the game started with both teams trading
physical blows and trying to gain dominance over proceedings. As
was expected it was a dog fight all over the park with neither
side really creating too many clear cut chances. Bayswater did
go ahead though when a terrible refereeing decision saw them get
a penalty which they converted. To their credit the Forest
didn’t drop their heads and were level not too long after when Sy Bahar nodded home a long range free kick. The boys went in at
halftime deservedly on level terms and with the wind advantage
to look forward to in the second half. The Forest started the
second half well and began controlling the game in all areas of
the pitch. Despite their obvious dominance they still failed to
create any real chances and when the ball unluckily struck the
hand of Frank Disario at the other end Bayswater were gifted
another penalty. Their striker converted again leaving the
Forest clearly frustrated. Shaun Grant and Jordan Scott both had
chances to level the scores but failed to convert towards the
end of the game and as they desperately pressed for the
equalizer got caught on the break as Bayswater made it 3-1. The
final whistle blew leaving the Forest players and supporters
bitterly disappointed and angry at the result. They will now
have to lift their heads and concentrate on winning their
remaining games if they are still to have a chance at the title.
A weeks break will help cure any niggling injuries and their
next game against Mitcham Warriors on July 18th is a
must win game.
Thank You
Friday 17th July
This Friday 17th July is the anniversary of the passing of one
of our outstanding young talents Alex Webb. The local school
is holding a match at Baynes Park on Friday at 4.00pm. Our

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Glen
Eira Phoenix
3-0 – P. Strajner 2, S. Grant
In the latest round of Division 1
matches the Forest came up against Glen Eira Phoenix. They
welcomed back several players from both injury and suspension to
a side which also included Alex Hundle and Brian Martin from the
Knights. They couldn’t have got off to a better start as they
were ahead after just 5 minutes as top scorer Pete Strajner
finished well from a Shaun Grant through ball. Soon after it was
2-0 as Grant converted a free kick from just outside the box
after a Glen Eira hand ball. The Forest continued to pile on the
pressure dominating in all areas of the pitch. It didn’t take
them long to make it 3-0 as Strajner pounced on a loose ball to
hammer an unstoppable shot into the net. Faultless all round the
boys were having one of their best halves of the season. Dave
Disley and Darryl Scott were controlling everything through the
middle while the hard running of Marty Quaye and Jordan Scott
down the wings was excellent. A dominant first half performance
by the Forest who held a commanding 3-0 at the break. The second
half was to prove a very similar story as the Forest continued
to press home their advantage. They had numerous chances to
extend their lead with both Sy Bahar and Brian Martin failing to
convert guilt edged opportunities. Defensive trio Bernie Herrok,
Frank Disario and David Hill didn’t give a thing away all day
and keeper Dave Milne continued his good form putting his body
on the line on several occasions to ensure he kept a clean
sheet. Despite their obvious dominance they did fail to extend
their advantage but still ran out comfortable 3-0 winners. A
highly commendable all round team performance by the boys who
are starting to gel nicely coming into the second half of the
season. Next match is the showdown against top of the table
Bayswater Strikers in what proves to be a season defining
encounter. We encourage all supporters to get down to Menzies
Creek and support the boys who will need all hands on deck to
get the desired result.

RESULTS JUNE 20th/21st
Mens Cup Matches
The quarter finals of the
Presidents cup saw two matches at Menzies the first being the
Sherbrooke Friars against the strong City Life team who they had
beaten the week previous in the league. The game finished 0-0
after extra time and the Friars finished off their penalties 4-2
to move into the semis. The second game saw the very experienced
Div 5 Arrows mixed with a few star youngsters up against the Div
6 Archers development team in a long expected David vs Goliath
match for the two Sherbrooke teams. The two games boasted a vast
array of both past, present and up and coming talent. With no
less than 11 father son combinations, 11 players U17 or less and
the vast remainder over 40 it promised to be an interesting day.
With 13 Junior coaches and 5 committee members on the field
bragging rights were all important for the winners. The first
goal came early when a free kick awarded outside the box floated
into the cross bar off the upright and into the net to give Mr Flukey and the Arrows an early lead. The youngsters didnt
capitulate however and fought hard the whole day. Late in the
second half a series of corners for the Archers nearly resulted
in an equalizer as the Archers took it up to the Arrows. The
second half saw the Archers loose 3 players through injury and
the Arrows started to get on top. The lack of reserves and the
fact that most of the youngsters had played a full match with
the U17s that morning started to take its toll. The Arrows
dominated the middle of the park and the Archers started to tire
quickly. Unlike the first half the Archers failed to get the
ball wide and gave away possession cheaply. Despite some dour
defence the Arrows eventually scored a second goal late which
put the game out of the Archers reach. It was however a very
enjoyable day played in very competitive but good spirits. It
should also be noted that the referee did an excellent job as
refs rarely get praise when deserved but often critisizm.

U12 Jackeroos vs Eltham
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Donvale Cannons
4-2 – J. Woischuk 2, P. Strajner 2
In the match of the round the
Forest came up against 2nd placed Donvale Cannons. It
promised to be a tough test for the boys as Donvale had only
lost 1 game all season. The boys started well and dominated the
early proceedings. They were unlucky to have a goal disallowed
early when Pete Strajner tucked home a through ball from Shaun
Grant but was flagged for offside. Despite their obvious
superiority in possession they failed to create any clear
chances and found themselves a goal behind when some hesitant
defending resulted in the Donvale winger shooting home from the
edge of the area. They weren’t behind for long though as some
excellent work down the left from Marty Quaye saw his precise
pass fall into the path of Josh Woischuk who finished
clinically. The Forest almost went in at halftime a goal ahead
when Strajner shot narrowly wide. Plenty of positive signs for
the Forest in the first half as the scored remained 1-1 at the
break. Donvale came out strongly early in the second half and
again capitalized on some lack luster defending when a deflected
shot went unfortunately over the dive of the despairing Dave
Milne. As they always do though the Forest responded well and
began taking control of the game. They were rewarded for their
persistence when Grant crossed for Strajner in space and he
rounded the keeper to level the scores. Soon after they were
ahead when a Grant free kick from the edge of the area was well
saved by the Donvale keeper but Woischuk was on hand to tap in
the rebound. Some hard work from defensive trio Bernie Herrok,
Frank Disario and David Hill kept the Forest lead in tact and
with 5 minutes to go Strajner sealed the victory when he had the
easiest of finishes following good work again by Woischuk. They
were unlucky not to get a 5th late on when Grant’s
persistence won the ball down the left and his cross was headed
home by Woischuk which would have completed his hatrick but the
referee blew for a soft foul on the Donvale defender. A hard
fought win by the boys who can take a lot of satisfaction out of
that performance. A week’s break now will help nurse any
niggling injuries as they look forward to strengthening their
squad in their next match against Glen Eira Phoenix.

A Message from Karen Webb
Under 9 Hornets
On Saturday the Under 9 Hornets travelled to Blackburn North.
It was a tough first half, with Blackburn Nth putting up a
good fight. Jamie Fidanza was lucky not to score after
shooting wide when he latched on to a through ball and found
himself one on one with the goalkeeper. The Hornets also
had two shots ricochet of the cross bar; one from Joseph Bencs
and Aaron Grenda. There was no score at half-time, even
though the Hornets goalie, Joshua Langhorn was untroubled by
the Balckburn forwards. In the second half Joseph and
Aaron avoided the bar and both scored fine goals to keep the
Hornets unbeaten record for 2009 in tact. The achivement
award was given to Quinn Helmore for showing excellent driving
runs from defense and delivering the ball to the forwards to
keep the pressure on the Nth Blackburn defense. A great
effort by all players!
U13 Bears
After some tough
matches, the Sherbrooke U/13 Bears were able to find some
rhythm against Whitehorse. After a strong opening it was Joel
Turpin who scored the first goal with a clinical finish to an
excellent cross from Max Rechner. The second goal also came
from a Max cross, who was finding space down the right, with
Liam Stauber opening his account for the season. After ten
minutes Nic Broomhead scored the third goal with a well-taken
shot from the edge of the box and the Bear's goal drought had
clearly broken. The fourth goal was a spectacular Liam header
that looped over the forlorn Whitehorse goalie's head, whilst
in the shadows of halftime a handball in the box saw Joel
neatly slot the penalty for his second. All the Bears played
strongly in this half, with Thyler Argoon in midfield and
Cossie Beecham proving a strong presence, new player Tim
outstanding in defence and Ben Saar safe in the goalie role.
Michael Park's creativity and Joel's speed through the
midfield was also proving potent, and a flood of goals
beckoned for the second stanza. Whitehorse approached the half
with renewed vigour, however, and managed to hold the Bears
scoreless for the first fifteen minutes whilst playing the
more creative football. Thyler (back in goal) made a couple of
good saves, while Sebastian, Adam , Paul, John and Tim were
all made to work hard in defence. The Bears gradually got back
on top as the half progressed, and an excellent ball through
to Joel and a good finish saw his third goal of the day in the
net, before Michael finished proceedings in the final moments
with a sweet strike from outside the box that gave the keeper
no chance. 7-0 gave the Bears a much-needed boost in the for &
against column, and was a deserved reward for somehard
work at training and persistence in tough matches: POTM - Tim
for his excellent work, especially in the first half.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Eastern
United
0-2
In the latest round of Division 1 the Forest came up against
bogey team Eastern United. They were looking to avenge 2
defeats to them last season. The boys started poorly and were
punished for some sloppy defending inside the first 10 minutes
when the Eastern striker was allowed to break free and score
the easiest of goals. 5 minutes later the Forest were in more
trouble when Darryl Scott stopped the ball crossing the goal
line with his hand and was given a red card. Eastern scored
the corresponding penalty and held a 2-0 and 1 man advantage
for the remaining 75 minutes of the game/ To the Forest credit
they showed their fighting qualities and created several
chances which cold have brought them back into the match.
Shaun Grant had a header cleared of the line and another
header came back off the inside of the post while Pete
Strajner had a shot which went narrowly wide. Despite their
best efforts it was still 2-0 at halftime. The second half was
to prove a very similar story as the Forest continued their
dominance. They created chance after chance but couldn’t get
themselves back into the game. Josh Woischuk was proving to be
a constant threat up front and ran tirelessly all day.
Strajner came close again when he shot just wide after being
sent through by Grant. Dave Milne made a few crucial saves
throughout the half to give the Forest from falling even
further behind and Frank Disario and Bernie Herrok both had
solid games. Jordan Scott and Marty Quaye showed they are
developing into important young players as they continued to
work tirelessly despite the chips being down. A disappointing
2-0 loss for the Forest but they can hold their heads high as
they fought out the game bravely despite their man
disadvantage. A welcome rest this week will help a number of
in juries and they will come back strongly in their next match
against 2nd placed Donvale.

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Dandy
Casuals
1-0 – N.Bahar
In the latest round of Division 1
the Forest came up against Dandy Casuals. They needed to improve
after last week’s poor showing in the Parry Shield. As has been
the case for the whole season so far injuries hampered the Forest
preparation and again only went into the match with 1 substitute.
The boys started well and were on top of the early proceedings.
They knocked the ball around well but failed to create any clear
cut chances. They did take the lead after 30 minutes when a Pierre
Philippeau corner was headed in by Naz Bahar. They came close to
doubling their advantage a few minutes later when a sweeping move
saw the ball find its way to Shaun Grant and his shot hit the
inside of the most and no one was on hand to tap the ball in while
it rolled along the goal line. All players were digging deep and
the Forest controlled the first half to lead 1-0 at half time. The
second half was to prove a very similar story as the Forest
continued their dominance. They created chance after chance but
couldn’t put the game to bed leaving the door open for a Dandy
equalizer. Marty Quaye came close on a number of occasions as did
Josh Woischuk, while a Grant free kick went narrowly over the
crossbar. A long range Frank Disario strike also tested the Dandy
keeper while Dave Disley and Jordan Scott worked tirelessly in the
middle of the park. As has been the case all season the Forest
defense was standing up strong with Bernie Herrok, Dave Hill and
Darryl Scott giving nothing away. Dandy had a chance late on to
grab a point out of the game when a volley from their striker was
brilliantly saved low down by Dave Milne who despite not having a
lot to do all game kept his concentration to keep the Forests lead
in tact. A much improved hard fought 1-0 win by the Forest who
continue to put pressure on league leaders Bayswater. Next up is
bogie team Eastern United who the Forest will be looking to beat
after losing to them twice last season.

U13 Bears vs
Richmond
Back at home the Sherbrooke Under 13 Bears were looking for a
much-improved performance against Richmond. From the outset the
Bears again looked strong and showed some good combination to work
the ball forward, only to lack finishing touches. The opening goal
was to come at the other end of the park, with Richmond rewarded
after good pressure when a loose ball in the goal mouth fell
fortunately to a Richmond player who booted it home. For the
remainder of the half the Bears played with great spirit but were
under pressure, with numerous chances foiled by some excellent
defensive work. In some respects Sherbrooke were lucky to be down
only 0-1 at halftime, with Thyler Argoon pulling off one
spectacular save to palm the ball over the crossbar, but they also
were well and truly in the match. The Bears came out with extra
purpose in the second half and built some excellent attacking
raids. It was new player Ben Saar who finally broke the goal
drought, connecting with an excellent cross that had beaten the
Richmond defence and left the goalie flummoxed. At 1-1 the match
began to open up with both teams striving for a goal and both
having opportunities, but desperate defence proving the winner on
most occasions. Some baffling refereeing decisions also
contributed to the intrigue, with at least three handballs going
unnoticed and the line officials being used sparingly, although
neither side could be said to have obtained an unfair advantage.
With the clock winding down a draw seemed a likely and fair
result, when a Richmond corner bounced dangerously around before
falling at the feet of an unmarked striker. His shot from the edge
of the box proved too strong to control. The Bears threw
everything at Richmond in search of another equaliser, but time
was short and 2-1 the final score. Player of the match for a
strong all round game and a well taken first goal for Sherbrooke
was Ben Saar.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Mooroolbark Knights
PARRY SHIELD
1-1 – S. Grant
(Lost 3-2 on penalties)
In the first round of the Parry Shield the Forest came up against
Division 2 side Mooroolbark Knights. In past years the cup has
brought some shock results so the boys knew they had to be ready
for the challenge. The Forest started slowly and failed to take
control of the game. If it weren’t for some last gasp tackles from
defensive duo Darryl Scott and Bernie Herrok they would surely
have found themselves a goal behind. They however weathered the
early storm and went ahead after 30 minutes when Shaun Grant
headed home a Ryan Cassidy corner. Cassidy himself was unlucky not
to double the advantage when his brilliant volley smacked against
the crossbar. Few chances were created after that and the score
remained 1-0 to the Forest at half time. The second half was to
prove a very similar story. A very flat looking Forest side failed
to get their passing game going at all and were found guilty of
wasting their opportunities when Mooroolbark were awarded a
dubious penalty after the ball had struck the hand of Frank
Disario. The striker scored the resulted spot kick and the score
was 1-1. Both sides had chances to win it late on with Forest
keeper Dave Milne making a fine low save to stop the Mooroolbark
forward scoring whilst at the other end a Grant volley went
agonizingly wide. 1-1 it finished and also after 5 minutes each
way of extra time there was still no score so a penalty shoot out
was required. The Forest scored both their first 2 penalties and 2
fine saves by Milne put them 2-0 ahead and in a commanding
position. But the Forest failed to score their next 5 penalties
and lost it 3-2 in sudden death. A
very disappointed coach and players resulted from a lack luster
Forest performance who will have to pick themselves up for their
next league game against Dandy Casuals.

U13 Bears
After a gutsy win against
Croydon last week, the Sherbrooke Under 13 Bears were again away,
this time to a strong Ashburton side. Sherbrooke started the match
strongly, showing good combination and control through midfield.
Joel and Michael began well in attack, with Nic on the left also
having some good touches. Max Rechner on the right was proving the
most incisive, however, and a superb cross after five minutes
should have resulted in the opening goal. Despite some good
sustained pressure, the Bears were unable to capitalise and
gradually Ashburton worked back into the game. After about fifteen
minutes some good ball movement was rewarded with a well-taken
goal and the Bears were down 0-1. Cosi and Paul worked hard in
defence, as did Liam in an unfamiliar but vital left back role
marking a speedy Ashburton attacker. The Bears were able to
maintain parity until close to half-time, when a shallow clearance
saw Ashburton again capitalise for a second goal. In the second
half the Bears tried some positional changes, including Cosi into
the goal and Thyler let loose in midfield. John, Paul and Adam
were prominent in this half for their work in defence as the
Bears came under increasing pressure. However, with the sun at
their backs (good use of local knowledge?) and strong crowd
support Ashburton began to gain ascendancy. Pushing more players
forward, and despite some scrambling efforts by a tiring
Sherbrooke, two more goals were conceded for an eventual 0-4
defeat. Back at Menzies Creek next week to face Richmond. POTM
- for a hard-working effort, Jonathan Marshall.
MENS FOREST (DIV 1) VS Berwick United
2-1 – M. Quaye, P. Strajner
In the match of the
round the Forest came up against Berwick United. The boys knew
they were in for a tough encounter as Berwick had defeated them on
the last day of the previous season. The Forest started
promisingly and on an extremely big pitch knocked the ball around
quite well. The surface was the best they’ve played on and it
showed as they played their passing game in an endeavor to break
through the Berwick defense. They did just that on 15 minutes when
Marty Quaye’s pressure resulted in him slotting the ball past the
despairing keeper. No more than 10 minutes later the Forest were 2
up when a shot by Quaye seemed to have struck the hand of a
Berwick defender, the referee didn’t blow for the penalty but the
ball found its way to Pete Strajner who smacked it home. The boys
came close to extending their lead when Jordan Scott had a great
chance and a long range Shaun Grant effort went narrowly wide.
They settled for 2-0 at half time though and appeared to be
cruising at this stage. Berwick came out fighting in the second
half and were doing all the early attacking. They pulled a goal
back when a corner wasn’t dealt with by the Forest defense and the
Berwick attacker struck the ball home. The Forest however
continued to create chances and could have sealed the game when
Ryan Cassidy shot a one on one chance straight at the keeper and
Quaye shot against the post. A Grant free kick also struck the
post after it had been dropped by the Berwick keeper. Some
slopping play nearly allowed Berwick back into the game as the
Forest players struggled to cope with the size of the pitch all
looking dead on their feet. They however held firm to run out 2-1
winners. A
hard fought victory by the boys who will have to perform better in
future matches to add to their 4 game winning streak. Their next
match is against Mooroolbark Knights in the Parry Shield.

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Knox Churches Force
3-1 – P. Strajner 3
In the match of the
round the Forest came up against last season’s premiers Knox in
what was certain to be their toughest match yet. In a new look
3-2-3-2 formation they couldn’t have started any worse conceding a
goal inside the first 20 seconds before they even touched the
ball. To add insult to injury two minutes later Knox were awarded
a penalty, although a fine save by keeper Dave Milne prevented the
Forest from a disastrous start. This sparked the boys into life
and they began taking control of the game. A long throw by Ryan
Cassidy was flicked on by Shaun Grant and headed home clinically
by top scorer Pete Strajner. No more than 5 minutes later the
forest were ahead after a terrible defensive mix up in the Knox
area saw the ball fall invitingly to Strajner who tucked the ball
away. The boys were rampant at this stage dominating in all areas
of the field. Josh Woischuk was unlucky not to score when his
brilliant long range effort was saved well by the Knox keeper.
However it was 3-1 soon after that when some good work by Cassidy
resulted in Strajner completing his hatrick. The score remained
3-1 at halftime with an excellent halves football by the forest.
With the instructions of coach Eddie Woischuk to keep the game
tight the boys came out in the second half determined not to let
the result slip through their fingers. They completely dominated
Knox all over the park and despite a few late half chances didn’t
give them a sniff. They were themselves unlucky not to extend
their lead when a header from Strajner came back off the post and
a free kick from Grant was well saved by the Knox keeper.
Everybody gave their all and it was a brilliant team performance
highlighted by the efforts of Dave Hill, Bernie Herrok and Darryl
Scott who repelled any attack made by the Knox attackers. The
elation of the result was clear to see on the faces of all the
players and coach Eddie as they savored the moment defeating their
arch enemies.
A deserved 3-1 win to the boys who showed they will
definitely be a force to be reckoned with against all comers this
season.
ThankYou
Now that registration rush is over it
is an opportune time to thank all those that assisted in the
working bee at Menzies that resulted in all the goals being
assembled and a mass of work in the rooms including painting and
refurbishing of the kitchen. A big thank you to Richard (U14
Gunners,U14 Dragons, U18 Pythons, U17 Panthers and Mens Archers.
No guesses to how Richard normally spends his weekends) and Cheryl
(U12 Jets) for painting the goals at Menzies. Also a thank you to
the U12 Jets for painting the goals at Baynes. It is also
opportune to thank our ground staff Shaun, Leo, JT and Eddie for
preparing all the pitches ready for the season. I am certain most
people are unaware of how much time it takes to measure up mark
and mow a ground prior to the start of the season. I would also
like to thank all the team managers for their excellent efforts
ensuring passports and match cards were correct and ready to go
for the first match. Unlike many other clubs we were well prepared
for the first match from an administrative viewpoint. Our aim next
year will be to ensure training can commence earlier to help with
our on field preparations as many teams were still somewhat short
on numbers due to our late start in training.

U15C
Girls “Saphyrz”
Sherbrooke Rangers Vs Boronia – 26th April
It was a cold, wet and windy Menzies Creek that
greeted the U15C Girls “Saphyrz” team as they jogged out to begin
the game. Under the new, ‘training squad’ system, the team
consisted of a mixture of some players from the ‘A’ team and ‘C’
team in 2008, along with 5 players who would play their very first
game of soccer! An added complication was that the goal keeper
from 2008 had decided to not play this season. Consequently, not a
lot was expected for this game. How wrong I was! The girls put on
a brilliant display of hard running, tough tackling and effective
passing to run out winners 2-1. The experienced girls, led by
Ellen, Alexa and Ella, constantly encouraged and guided the new
players and they responded by displaying tenacity and skills we
didn’t know they possessed. This was best demonstrated by Lucy,
who played defence and midfield and never gave up, and Annalise,
who created many chances as a forward and slotted in two goals.
Special mention should be made of Jayde and Annabel who showed
great character by each agreeing to play ½ the game in goals. The
unique spirit that carried the ‘Saphyrz’ team to some great
performances through the 2008 season still exists this year, and I
am sure we will hear the famous victory song many times in 2009!
U13 BearsVs Bulleen
The U13 Sherbrooke Bears faced Bulleen at home in
their first match in the FFV “B” division in cold and windy
conditions. The Bears were under pressure from the outset, with
Bulleen having the better of the first part of the match and the
ball rarely out of Sherbrooke’s half. Adam Doolan, Sebastian
Schmuecke-Mueller and Ayden Furlong scrapped hard in defence
whilst Thyler Argoon in goal was kept very busy. With possession
and territory very much going Bulleen’s way a goal seemed
inevitable, and after about 15 minutes it was a cracking shot from
outside the box that found the net, giving Thyler no chance. The
Bears then stepped things up a gear with Joel Turpin and Michael
Park beginning to find space around the fringes, whilst new
Sherbrooke player Ben Saar showed some good touches. It was,
however, almost against the run of play when a goal was conceded
to an excellent floating Bulleen corner after an untidy goal mouth
scramble. 0-2 at halftime and with conditions getting icier by the
minute, a bucket of warm water helped the Bears thaw out. The
second half saw a much-improved effort with Sherbrooke dominating
territory and possession. A couple of chances went begging and a
deserved goal would not come against a well-organised defence, but
overall some good combinations began to flow. Joel was again
outstanding in this half, whilst Max Rechner had too much pace for
his opposite and was unlucky not to procure a score with some
excellent crosses. In the final moments of the half and again
against the run of play Bulleen scored a third goal with another
floating corner. At 0-3 it was a difficult start for the season
but with plenty of improvement to come the boys can look forward
with confidence to next week. MOTM – Joel Turpin
U9 Hornets
The Sherbrooke Under 9 Hornets
started where they left off last season - in winning fashion!
On an Anzac day morning, with rain threatening, the boys
travelled to Mooroolbark and came away with a 2-0 win. The
Hornets constantly pressured the Mooroolbark goal but were
finding it hard to score through a crowded defence. Just
before half-time Will Finlay’s shot from outside the area was
too strong for the Mooroolbark keeper, who couldn’t hold it
and allowed the ball to drop over the line. Will Finlay
scored again in the second half, after a run down the right
wing out of defence saw him dribble past three players and
find himself in the clear with only the keeper to beat. His
shot on goal found the back of the net. Mooroolbark was
unlucky, on a few occasions they broke on the counter-attack
and two great saves from the Hornets keeper Jamie Fidanza and
crucial tackles from the captain Quinn Helmore and Aaron
Grenda kept Mooroolbark scoreless. In his first game of
soccer Finley John threatened with a close shot on goal and
Dylan Ireland and Joshua Langhorn also came close to scoring
with near misses in the second half. A great game to watch
and a fantastic start to the season for the Sherbrooke
Hornets.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Casey City
4-3 – P. Strajner 2, S.
Grant, P. Philippeau
In the latest round of the matches the Forest came up against
Casey City. In the corresponding fixture last season the boys went
down 3-0 so knew this would be a tough encounter. They started
well and had a few early chances against the strongest of winds.
Despite this they went behind 1-0 when some hesitant defending
resulted in a free shot for the Casey striker. Not long after
though they were back on level terms when a quickly taken corner
from Pierre Philippeau was headed home by Shaun Grant. They came
close a number of times after but again found themselves a goal
behind when the Casey winger wasn’t tracked and he chipped the
ball over the despairing grasp of keeper Dave Milne. Again the
boys fought back well and where level again 10 minutes later. Some
good work down the right saw the ball with Grant and his cross
found Pete Strajner to head home. The Forest had several chances
to score but the game remained at 2-2 at halftime. Now with the
aid of the strong breeze the Forest came out strongly in the
second half. Some near misses including a chip by Strajner that
came back off the crossbar followed but finally they got the goal
they deserved when a shot by Ryan Cassidy seemed to have struck
the hand of a Casey defender and amongst the confusion the ball
broke to Philippeau who finished well. Some dogged defending by
Bernie Herrok, Darryl Scott and Dave Hill was closing the door on
all Casey attacks and Frank Disario was a commanding presence in
the middle of the park. They all but sealed the game with 15
minutes to go when Grant won possession in the middle and Marty
Quay played a through ball for Strajner to run through and score.
A late free kick proved nothing but consolation for Casey and the
boys ran out 4-3 winners. An excellent result for the Forest who
face last seasons premiers and enemies Knox in the next match.

Start to Seniors
Season
The start to the season has been
somewhat mixed for the seniors. Unfortunately we had to forfeit
the Mens Div 5 Arrows and The Ladies div2 Kookaburras matches due
to lack of numbers and time in processing the necessary
documentation. Our Div 1 Mens and Ladies both fronted bench marks
for the competition without their strongest squads and both away
from home. The Ladies shocked run away league winners for the past
two seasons Mooroolbark with a 1-1 draw. The Forest had
opportunities to wrap up the game early but conceeded 3 quick
goals in a ten minute period to go down 2-4 to Canterbury. The new
look Knights cruised to a 5-2 victory at Menzies proceeded by the
Div 6 Friars securing a 1-0 victory. Newcomers The Archers were
very unlucky to lose 3-4 away to Shacs but can be encouraged by
the outstanding performances of some of the 7 junior players
playing in the team. Josh Newman scoring a wonderful header from a
corner and Mark Howard putting one away with the left foot to
score their first senior goals.
MATCH REPORT:
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Bayswater Strikers
2-4 – P. Strajner
In the opening round of the division 1 for
2009 he Forest came up against newly promoted Bayswater Strikers.
They had recruited well bringing in 4 new players, David Disley,
Pierre Philippeau, Radek Hrabal and Marty Quay. They also welcomed
young Josh Woischuk to the team. Despite being slightly
undermanned through suspension and injuries the Forest had come
off a solid pre season ready to take on a strong Bayswater side.
The boys started well and should have been 2 goals up inside the
first 15 minutes as Pete Strajner first headed narrowly wide from
an excellent cross from the right by David Disley and then have
his shot saved after he was through on goal. Stand in sweeper Rob
Ireson was controlling the defense superbly negating all attacks
by Bayswater leaving goalkeeper Dave Milne with very little to do
first half. Despite their best efforts the deadlock was unbroken
and the scored remained at 0-0 at halftime. The boys started the
second half positively and began creating several more chances.
Marty Quay forced a good save out of the Bayswater keeper after
his clever turn and shot. With an hour gone the Forest finally got
there rewards an opened the scoring thanks to Strajner’s
persistence in front of goal. He challenged the keeper fairly and
tapped the resulting loose ball into an empty net. Their lead was
short lived though and a 10 minute laps in concentration would
prove to cost the Forest dearly. They found themselves 3-1 behind
in a hurry and from then on were constantly chasing the game. They
then conceded a 4th goal and were also reduced to 10
men when Disley was sent off for a mistimed challenge. However the
Forest continued to work hard and was rewarded with a late
consolation goal when some good chasing by Quay resulted in the
ball falling to Strajner who finished well. A good first up
performance by the Forest who despite losing the game 4-2 showed
that they will again have a solid season once back to full
strength. Next game is against Mitcham Warriors at home on April
18th.
CLUB SHIRTS
The club is introducing a new club shirt design for 2009 and as
required will be fitting out teams. These shirts offer the
opportunity for players to purchase their own shirt with their
name printed on the back as the team is fitted out. The policy for
introduction of these shirts which will be strictly adhered to
will also be available after 26th January on the website.
The Rockets at Bob Jane Stadium
Again the Rockets were called
upon to assist Melbourne Victory in their quest for supremacy.
This time they were ball boys at the Victory Youth team match
against Adelaide United. The ball boy duties were carried out
very professionally. We are not sure whether Ernie Merrick will
first call upon the Rockets as young players or the upon the
impressive Rockets parents who were great stretcher bearers. As
you can see on the photo, the Sherbrooke Rangers also made up the
largest number of spectators. Go Rockets - Go Victory!!!!

All the players of the Mens Masters that recently had such a
wonderful time in Geelong at The Australian Masters Games are
invited along with their families to attend a get together at the
Monbulk Bistro on Saturday March 28th at 7.00pm. Ring Leo Webb for
more details. The Mohawks finished on top after the round robin
but suffered from a severe bout of Alcohol poisoning in the finals
and failed to bring home a medal. It is believed the eventual
winners The Bobs paid the Upwey South Netball team substantial
money to keep the Mohawks out partying till late.

Working Bee
Thank you to the 8 adults and 4 kids that showed up
for the working bee. The consequence of this is that all the
training balls have now been organized into bags and will be ready
for collection any day after Tuesday 17th March. The club rooms
have been cleaned thoroughly and the managers bags partly sorted
to ensure necessary equipment, first aid and paperwork will be
available for the managers meetings. Unfortunately for the 594
people that didnt show this means there are no goals up grounds
not marked kitchen not set up among many other things. As a
consequence I trust you will all be very understanding when i am
unable to produce all the 500 players ID's and 41 team lists
because I am busy putting up goals the week prior to the season
start. From our 8 Senior teams for 2009 we had one attendee and
with less than 20 days to the start of the season the question has
to be asked how do you expect to play with no marked grounds, no
goal posts, no ID cards, no match balls, and no match cards. Good
luck for the season cuz at the moment the club looks like
forfeiting the 1st round.

only have registered players for 3 Mens teams but believe there is
more than enough interested players to field 6 teams. Register
or miss out!!!

REGISTRATION FOR 2009
The club is expecting a bumper
season for 2009 and expect to field a minimum of 41 teams. As has
become our normal start to a new soccer season where all these
teams will play has as yet not been finalized due to lack of
venues. Teams must be registered by March 1st so the club will be
adopting a first in first served approach and will ensure everyone
that registers on REGISTRATION DAYS, being 13th and 14th, February
will be given the opportunity of playing in a team. Those
registering after this date can not be guaranteed a position
regardless of whether they played last season or not. All Sunday
teams play in a graded competition so positions in these teams
will be by invite and can not be guaranteed even if this was the
team you were registered in during 2008.
Registration Days will be:
Friday 13th February 5.00pm - 8.00pm
Saturday 14th February 10.00am -2.00pm
At Menzies Reserve Clubrooms Blackhill Rd Menzies Creek
Registration forms can be downloaded from the website as of
January 26th and either posted or faxed in if you can not attend
on registration day.
Please note ALL SUNDAY PLAYERS WILL NEED TO BE REPHOTOGRAPHED

The Rockets at TelstraDome
The U10 Rockets were invited to
carry the sponsorship banner on to the field for the Melbourne
Victory vs Queensland Roar match on January 2. With 15 players
required, the Rockets needed some help from some of our other
teams to make up the numbers.
We were the first to witness the
state of the pitch after the 'New Years Eve' rave party. The
referee was going to cancel the game because the grounds were
substandard, so we'd better make sure he never comes to Menzies or
Baynes in winter.
The kids had a ball running on to
the field and having front row spots. The free tickets for the
parents and a pretty good game with Victory winning, meant that
everybody had a good night.
Go Rockets (and Go Victory) ! ! !

Greenfields Site
The council has given informal support to the proposal to develop
a greenfields site to accomodate current and future developments
of our sport in the Dandenong's. The official vote has been
delayed awaiting further reports and when a date is set for the
vote we will be seeking members support at the council meeting.
The excellent work done by councillor Graeme Warren and Samantha
Dunn over the past
two years to make this project a reality needs to be supported in
the upcoming election. If you live or have friends or relatives
that live in Graham's Chandler Ward or Samanthas Lyster Ward we ask you to support them
at the Council elections as there is still a great deal of work to
be done to see this project through to its end and without their
support it will be very unlikely to happen in the near future.

Get Well Soon
To put peoples minds at rest Ray Turley coach of the U13 Dragons
and U11 Jets is recovering quickly from his recent stroke. Apart
from a little weakness on one side, which he is addressing with
gardening and walking, he hopes to return to work as early as this
coming Tuesday. On behalf of the club we wish him a speedy
recovery and can probably be sure he will be at the soccer in the
not to distant future.

Reports Aug 23rd/24th
The Hoods
An amazing fight back by the our 5th Division Hoods team has kept
them on track for promotion. They seemed somewhat shell shocked
having a reserve and started the game trying to play everything up
the centre against a very tall Berwick team that are very strong in
the air. Their natural talent created a few half chances that went
either wide or over the bar. Their defence seemed at six and sevens
early when a free kick was volleyed in giving the visitors an early
lead. This was followed by a rebound goal when two Hoods defenders
crashed into each other leaving them two down very early. Despite
their speed at the back the Hoods were getting caught on the break
and when a lob sailed in putting them 0-3 down after only 20 minutes
one thought it might not be their day. However the team not only
boasts outstanding talents but also tireless workers in the middle
that never give up. Christian, Joe, Patrick Baker and Mark Tory all
continued their excellent work rate that persisted all match and
when Patrick Terry pulled himself wide up front a few holes started
to appear in the Berwick defense. Pat had a few opportunities on his
left that he didn't take but eventually set up a goal boosting their
confidence immensely. When a corner was pushed out of the danger
zone and Mick Terry hooked it back in over his head I am sure he was
surprised to turn and see it sail over the keeper to bring the score
back to 2-3 at half time. The second half was all Hoods but they
were constantly being frustrated. Leighton's shot was deflected
wide, one powered into the cross beam and several went over or wide
before the amazing talent of Pat Terry won a penalty when his
trickery had the defender take his legs from under him. A good save
by the keeper though frustrated the team further until the speed of
Matt on the left allowed him to get a toe between keeper and
defender and finally equalize. Finally on level terms the childish
behaviour of Leighton then let his team mates down when he was sent
off for swearing. This is a position however the Hoods have got used
to this season being a player or more short on many occasions and
when Alex Hundle fired in a cannon from only a few metres off the
goal line but near the edge of the box leaving the keeper no chance
the game was all but over. Brian had dropped back to shore up the
defense with Steve Robinson and virtually made the defence
impenetrable but still ventured forward on occasion to create some
excellent synergies with Pat, Matt and Alex. Though only one more
goal was forthcoming several may have easily happened. Though the
brilliance of the youngsters won the game it was the toughing it out
early by Christian, Patrick Baker, Mark and Joe that kept the game
alive when it could have been easier to throw in the towel. In all
an excellent hard fought victory.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Dandy Casuals
3-2 – R. Cassidy, F. Disario, S. Grant
In the latest round of the division 1 the Forest came up
against Dandy Casuals. Some strong recent results showed that they
weren’t to be taken lightly as they had beaten Casey and drawn with
Knox. The boys started well had on what was easily the best pitch
they’ve played on all season knocked the ball around well. A
tactical change by coach, Eddie Woischuk saw Frank Disario start the
game up front and this paid dividends when after some neat passing
Disario crossed for Ryan Cassidy to open the scoring with a nice
volley. Their lead was short lived though as a free kick from the
right was whipped in and the Dandy player was allowed to jump
unmarked to head home. Pete Strajner nearly put the Forest back in
front shortly after when he had a shot well saved by the goalkeeper
and Disario came close again after an excellent long ball from
Bernie Herrok. Despite their best efforts and a couple of important
saves from keeper Mario Korporaal the score remained 1-1 at half
time. The boys started the second half positively and went ahead
soon after. A corner from Terry Wynne was headed towards goal by
Shaun Grant and as Strajner hooked the ball into the net it struck
the outstretched hand of the Dandy defender. From the resulting
penalty Disario stepped up and squeezed the ball under the keepers
body to make the score 2-1. The Forest continued to knock the ball
around well in patches and a pass from Gary Lewis found its way to
Grant who hit a shot from distance which had too much on it for the
Dandy keeper. This seemed to spark Dandy into life though and they
pulled a goal back with 15 minutes to go after their forward
capitalized on a loose ball in the box. Some dogged defending by Ned
Culibrk and Darryl Scott shut the door on any last gasp chances that
Dandy conjured up and the boys ran out winners 3-2. A
very good all round team performance and the boys will look forward
to a weeks rest now as they have the bye to rest up any niggling
injuries.
U12 Bears
Last away match of the season for the Bears was against bottom of
the table Mooroolbark. With the opening goal to the Bears coming
after only 2 minutes, and Liam Stauber having notched three of his
own by midway through the first half, the Bears were able to play an
open and relaxed game and enjoy themselves after a number of tense
battles in recent weeks. Max Rechner constantly made ground with the
ball down the right wing and finished off a good cross from Nic
Broomhead to score just before half time, whilst Michael Park was
very cool and calculated in taking the chances on offer to finish
with two goals. Thyler Argoon was given the chance to roam free from
goal, proving industrious in midfield together with Jonathan
Marshall, and Lachlan Maclean had an outstanding match feeding the
ball to the forward line with precision, ably assisted by Adam
Doolan. After spending the opening part of the match on the bench,
in the second half Zach Luecke was too quick for the Mooroolbark
defence and scored two goals. Mooroolbark became frustrated as the
match progressed, resulting in some heavy challenges and three
yellow cards followed by one red. One challenge on Nic in the goal
square also resulted in a penalty being awarded that was duly
converted by Kane Angulo. The final score was 11-0, Liam finishing
with four goals, and the Bears are assured of a top 4 finish, with
second still a possibility if results go their way. A deserving
player of the match for a typically tireless and unselfish display
was Lachlan Maclean.

U16 Pythons
The Sherbrooke U16A grade
Pythons continued there exciting brand of soccer that either
results in what seems an unfair defeat or was on this occasion a
demolition job of class opposition. In this case league leaders
Whitehorse were on the receiving end of a 5-1 thumping that could
have easily been more. Jacco Kersten despite having one of his
poorest matches for the year still picked up a hat trick which
leaves you to wonder just how good this boy may become in the
future. The other star forward Josh Woischuk also had a quieter
game and still scored two goals. The stars of the game came from
the drive from the defense and midfield. Due to injuries U15 fill
ins Joris Kerstens and Leon Wardrope were asked to step up and
step up they did giving exceptional drive down the left wing and
winning most balls that came their way. At half time it was 1-1
despite Sherbrooke having most of the game. In the past the second
half has seen the same pressure taken into the second half
resulting in either frustrating losses or demolition of the
opposition. This week James Lodder was outstanding in the central
defence giving exceptional drive forward and coupled with an
outstanding man of the match performance from Tom Baldock
demolition was the order of the day. Tom had a hand in at least 3
goals and set plenty up that should of been goals. His desire to
win the ball and then distribute superbly was a joy to watch. One
can only wonder what might have been if things had gone the boys
way early in the season.
U16 Sparx
The U16 Sparx continued to push for a top
two finish with a 7-1 win over Mooroolbark this weekend. The girls
started very hesitantly and suddenly found themselves 1-0 down.
This seemed to "spark" the girls into action and some good build
up play from Rheanan and Nicole found Alex in space who crossed
for Jordy to score. Jordy then added a 2nd through sheer
persistence and then Jess converted to give the girls a 3-1 half
time lead. The girls were told to lift their attack on the ball
and talk more in the 2nd half and responded brilliantly. Emily was
sweeping with confidence and strength and Olivia and Tara were
superb fullbacks pushing the ball forward and tackling hard.
Adriana was fantastic in her attack on the ball covering the
middle and on the 2 occasions that the defence was pierced Georgia
came to the fore diving in bravely at the attackers feet. It
wasn't long before Jess added a fourth and when Erica slotted in
from 6 yards the girls knew they had the game won. They were first
to the ball all the time and Kara, Nicole, Rheanan and Alex were
creating numerous chances. Nicole got on the score sheet when she
slammed one home from the edge of the box and then Jordy completed
her hat-trick with a thunderbolt from outside the area. Best on
ground was Rheanan for her relentless attack on the ball and
ferocious tackling. Well done Sparx.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Knox Churches Force
1-3 – S. Grant
In what was talked up as a prospective grand final the Forest came
up against Knox for the third time this season. Both previous
games had been very close encounters and this was no exception.
The boys started brightly and controlled the game for the first
half hour. Pete Strajner and Ryan Cassidy were causing the Knox
defense all sorts of problems and Darryl Scott was winning
everything in midfield. They went ahead on the 20 minute mark when
a long throw from Cassidy was headed home by Shaun Grant. It was
nearly 2 soon after when Strajner had a header well saved by the
Knox keeper and Grant couldn’t capitalize on the follow up header
from Frank Disario. Knox then began getting their passing together
and equalized through a long range shot which snuck past Mario
Korporaal at his near post. The Forest then unfortunately conceded
again right on the stroke of half time when the Knox winger wasn’t
closed down quickly enough allowing him to also hit a long range
shot this time leaving Korporaal with no chance. Eddie reshuffled
the troops at halftime looking for the desired affect. Bernie
Herrok did a great job of shutting out the Knox captain who hardly
got a touch after being influential early. The defense was working
tirelessly with Ned Culibrk, Dave Milne and Jordan Scott all
giving their all for the cause. The boys continued to try hard but
Knox’s superior fitness proved to be the deciding factor. They
went 3-1 up half way through the second half when the forward was
sent through on goal to finish. Despite being behind the Forest
continued to press hard and a flick on by Grant from another long
throw came close to pulling a goal back. Dave Hill came close a
few times also but it wasn’t to be for the boys. A very spirited
performance by the entire team was to no avail but they could hold
their heads up high. The boys will be looking to finish the season
out strongly with their next match against Dandy Casuals.

Reports Aug 9th/10th
The weather had an
unbelievable turn for the Sunday matches at Menzies Creek snowing
heavily for most of the second half of the U12 match. This coupled
with rain and latter hail meant two matches were cancelled and
that with the forecast for a week of rain it has been decided to
close Menzies Creek from training for the rest of this coming week
for ALL TEAMS. Both teams in the U12 match doned Beanies and
goally gloves at half time and bravely completed their match in
some of the coldest conditions they will probably ever have to
play in.
U12 Bears
The Sherbrooke Under 12’s
may be renamed the “Snow Bears” after a torrid encounter in
remarkable conditions against Lalor. With the temperature hovering
at zero, the Bears indeed seemed frozen at kick-off as Lalor
scored an immediate goal, their winger breaking down the left side
and beating a number of Sherbrooke players before giving Thyler
Argoon in goal no chance. With the pitch muddy, the ball was heavy
and passing difficult whilst a number of players were underdone
after battling flu and colds to get on the pitch. After about ten
minutes, the snow began to fall and became heavier as the half
progressed. The Bears were well-served in attack by Zac h Luecke
whilst Lachlan Maclean and Adam Doolan battled hard in defence,
but a physical Lalor side seemed to be handling the conditions
better. The half-time score was 0-1 and the Bears headed inside to
warm up, emerging with gloves and beanies aplenty for the second
half. Incredibly, the snow became heavier with big flakes drifting
down. The Bears began to string together some attack, Nic
Broomhead and Paul Torsello standing out whilst Max Rechner, in
his first match back after a broken arm, caused havoc with his
speed around the edges. Max Gates was standing up to much larger
opposition with aplomb in midfield. In the mud there were some
physical challenges from Lalor, resulting in a yellow card against
a repeat offender before midway through the half Zac h Luecke
weaved through some heavy Lalor defence to find the net with an
excellent strike. Despite a number of opportunities, the Bears
were unable to add a second goal and the match ended at 1-1 with
both teams to be commended for persevering against the elements.
With two matches left the Bears will need other results to go
their way to hang onto a top two finish. Player of the Match – Zach

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Eastern United
0-2
In the latest round of
matches the Forest came up against Eastern United. The boys had
lost disappointingly to them earlier in the season so were looking
to make a mends. This was not to be though as they squandered
several early chances. Despite dominating possession for the first
half hour of the game the Forest couldn’t take advantage and fell
behind to a soft goal. 5 minutes later they were 2-0 down as a
defensive mistake led to the Eastern United winger being through
on goal and he took his chance well. Overall the Forest did
dominate the majority of the first half yet found themselves 2-0
down at the break. A clearly disappointed coach Eddie Woischuk
cried out for more from his players in the second half but it just
wasn’t the Forest’s day. They looked totally out of sorts with
their usual flowing moves being no existent. Stand out
performances by a few individuals weren’t enough as many of the
team was having an off day. They managed to create a few second
half chances but failed to capitalize and ended up losing the game
2-0. Not only did they lose the game they also lost their place on
top of the league as Casey drew with Dandy Casuals.
A tough game next
up against rivals Knox which could prove to be a decider comes
seasons end. The boys will need to get back to winning ways should
they wish to be a serious title contender.

The Ladies
The Ladies came up against undefeated leaders Mooroolbark after
their poor performance the previous week. They eventually lost 1-3
but performed very well against a team boasting 8 State players.
Defensively the team performed very strongly closing down the
midfield and repelling most attacks. The Newman family had
exceptional games with Carol closing down the winger that supplies
most of their dangerous crosses and often turning defence into
attack. Tanya swept superbly whilst Hayley cleaned up in goal. It
was only a lack of concentration in the last minute of the first
half where we didnt get off the posts quick enough to stop a
through ball falling at a forwards feet a few metres out that
allowed Mooroolbark the lead. A mix up in the second half allowed
a simple tap in for Mooroolbark to give them a 2-0 lead. It wasnt
all one side however as Stella Job continues to improve and
trouble defences and after a few balls went wide a great long shot
from Petra powered into the crossbar. With no interchange left
Hayley had to swap with Perri in centre midfield which gave us a
little more drive from Perris long kicks and Hayleys tenacity in
the attacking half which eventually resulted in a deserved penalty
that Hayley converted. The heading was a big improvement this week
with young Lauren Millard continuing to lead the way in attacking
the ball. Overall a vastly improved team performance that should
hold the Ladies in good steed for the up coming Semi Final of the
cup.
U10 Rockets
It may have stopped raining but Baynes Park still looked like a
mudbath when the U10 Rockets showed up to play against the Eltham
Eagles. As has been the case in the last couple of matches the
game was played on the oppositions half, which meant that the
rotation policy from back to middle to front lines was accepted
gratefully again by all players. Josh Hogben had some dull moments
in goal in the first half, but had a good run in the second half.
It didn't take long for the pressure to pay off with Alan Damen
scoring a couple of goals in quick succession, a shot from the
edge of the penalty box for the first one, and a solo run,
including passing the keeper, for the second goal. Cody Karsikas
played well in midfield, spurred on by his dads visit from
Queensland. Chris Heckenberg reckoned he scored a goal from a
curving cornerkick, but sadly the referee saw things differently.
2-0 to the Rockets for the half time score.
In the second half more of the
same pressure, Shaun Allen scored with a well timed volley from a
ball that came back into the field. Some good passing between
Chris and Will Farrow in the midfield started the build-up to
another scoring chance, Isaac Van Rossen dribbled passed a couple
of Elthamites and scored. An indirect freekick in the penalty area
gave Chris his chance to show off his kicking skills and show off
he did. A beautifully executed hard shot that could only be
touched, not stopped, by the keeper. 5-0. And this how it stayed.
Well done Eagles, well done Rockets, "Go Rockets"!

FOREST
(DIV 1) VS Mitcham Warriors
5-1 – P. Strajner 4, S. Grant
In the latest round of matches the Forest came up against last
season’s premiers Mitcham Warriors. The boys had their best start
to a game all season dominating early to be 4-0 up inside the
first 20 minutes. Pete Strajner opened the scoring after he
latched onto a long ball from Shaun Grant to hammer the ball past
the despairing keeper. 5 minutes later it was 2-0 when Grant
headed home after good work down the left by Ryan Cassidy.
Strajner added 3rd when he again was end of a great
long ball this time from Dave Hill. It was 4 soon after as Bernie
Herrok whipped in a pin point corner for Strajner to complete his
hat trick with a point blank range header. The forest continued to
press their advantage and where awarded a penalty when Grant was
pushed over in the box. He failed to capitalize though as the
keeper save his weak shot comfortably. However it was 5-0 soon
after that when Strajner constant persistence paid off again
resulting in his 4th of the game. Mitcham managed to
pull a goal back close to half time when a long range shot found
its way passed keeper Mario Korporaal. An excellent first halves
display by the boys, 5-1 the half time score. The second half was
played at a much slower tempo as the Forest could there foot off
the peddle somewhat. They did manage to create a number of good
chances and could have easily won the game by a heavier margin.
New boy Josh Woischuk showed great promise in his first game for
the seniors and looks to be a find for the future. The defense
stood up strong as always and skipper Darryl Scott had his usual
solid game. An overall good performance by the boys who will be
looking to take revenge on Eastern United next up after their
defeat earlier in the season.

Reports for Weekend July 19th/20th
The passing of Alex Webb was recognized at most
venues over the weekend with Sherbrooke teams all wearing black
arm bands and games beginning with one minutes silence. Many
opposition teams went out of their way to offer sympathy and
condolences to club representatives prior to the matches
demonstrating the depth of this tragedy in the soccer community.
My heart wasn't in it this weekend so I apologize for lack of
scores recorded.
U10 Rockets
The U10 Rockets played at
home against 'top of the ladder' Berwick United. And with a full
strength team (Ari Fanney back from his Icelandic holidays), the
Rockets gave themselves lots of room and lots of chances.
Josh Hogben has settled well in
goal and with his defensive line up of Ari, Will Farrow, Cody
Karsikas and Shane Deane played a solid first half. It was
however the tireless running of Alan Damen and Chris Heckenberg
that saw the ball moving up the field in the right direction
continuously. Practising juggling at training almost paid off for
Isaac Van Rossen, who bounced the ball on his foot and knee a
couple of times before narrowly missing a shot at goal. It wasn't
long before good pressure work meant that Chris could open the
scoring for the Rockets. Good control in the midfield by Shaun
Allen, coupled with good surefooted clearances by Shaun, Cody and
Jordan Dicker, kept the ball in the Berwick half. This pressure
play got its reward when Tanner Bayly scored the second goal with
a good shot from within the penalty box. If you work that hard,
you deserve to get your name spelled correctly: Tanner Bayly.
Berwick put some more pressure on
the Rockets in the second half, even requiring a couple of good
saves from Tanner (this time in goal). Patrick Walker, as usual,
provided assistance all over the field, as well as in his
defensive position. The Rockets weathered the storm with Chris and
Alan back in more defensive roles, even though it does sometimes
seem a bit hard for Alan to be restricted to a single position.
It stayed two-nil for the Rockets. Well done Berwick, well done
Rockets, "Go Rockets"!
U12 Bears
The U12 Bears started away strongly against the lowly placed Glen
Waverley. Zac Luecke was a dynamo and created, and also missed,
some chances. Liam Stauber followed up with another gold etched
chance. A few corners were well placed but could not be converted.
To make matters even worse, the first and only chance for the
hosts in the first half led to their attacker running trough and
leaving Keeper Thyler Argoon no chance. 0-1 at half time and
memories from the Caulfield game could not be avoided. The second
half saw some inspired positional changes, with Max Gates and Adam
Doolan moving from defence into attack. Zac nearly scored from the
kick off. Soon after, a perfect cross by Liam finally broke the
duck. Max was well placed and finished coolly. This was followed
by Adam’s goal, whose perseverance paid off. His job done, he was
ordered back into defence. Shortly after the Glen Waverley team
missed an excellent chance. Kane Angulo cleared in extremis. He
had an outstanding game in midfield, never giving up and creating
various chances. After good work through the midfield Michael Park
scored the expected winner. 3-1, the game looked safe.
Unfortunately, shortly after a mix up in defence led to another
goal for the never die Glen Waverley. Sturdy defensive work led by
Ahren Angulo and ably deputised by Lochie Maclean and Paul
Torsello held the opposition team at bay. It is also worth
mentioning the fighting effort by Jon Marshall and Alex Murray.
The latter never giving up, despite an injury. Player of the match
went to Max Gates for his first goal of the season and an overall
good effort.
PARRY SHIELD – SEMI FINAL
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Knox Churches Force
0-1
In the semi final of the Parry Shield the Forest where
drawn against league rivals Knox. Being arguably the 2 best sides
in division 1 both teams came to play. After the unfortunate
events of the week the boys where determined to give it everything
they had in honor of the Webb family and the tragic loss if their
son Alex.
Both teams started brightly and created several chances. With
Forest going with the wind they where looking to pile the pressure
onto the Knox defense. Sy Bahar and Pete Strajner both had very
near misses, while at the other end a fine save by Mario Korporaal
fell invitingly to the Knox striker although he failed to
capitalize with the goal gaping. Some inspirational tackling by
Darryl Scott was proving tough for the Knox players and the hard
running of midfielders Bernie Herrok, Shaun Grant and Dave Hill
ensured the Forest dominate the majority of proceedings. Despite
their dominance they couldn’t break the deadlock and the score
remained 0-0 at halftime. Knox thought they had the game won now
that they where attacking with the wind in the second half but the
Forest boys had other ideas. They knocked the ball around well and
Strajner and Ryan Cassidy where still causing the Knox defense
headaches. It was Knox though who had the better of the chances
and the Forest where only kept in the game thanks to some dogged
defending by Dave Milne, Frank Disario and Jordan Scott and
excellent goalkeeping by Korporaal. They boys had thought they’d
done enough to see the game into extra time but a long range shot
by the Knox player could only be parried by Korporaal into the
path of the Knox striker who finished well with 2 minutes to go.
This was heartbreaking for the Forest boys who had given their all
throughout the match. They managed to create one last chance when
a header by Grant fell to Strajner and his header was unluckily
cleared of the goal line. A 1-0 win to Knox in a very entertaining
and hard fought encounter. The boys could hold their head up high
and will be looking to continue their excellent league form
against Morrison next match.

CLINIC
The Sub junior clinic got off to a rough start with no power at
the clubrooms first up. However the rain held off for the day and
all the participants had a great day. Spain followed up their
recent European triumph winning the Mini World cup coached by U8
Hawks coach Michael Desgranges. Players of the day went to Natalie
Doolan and Jai Trimboli. The giant soccer ball was a favorite of
most.
The Junior Clinic was completed on Thursday with nearly 80 participants. Australia beat England in the final 2-1 and players of the clinic went to Michael DeMilio and Nicki Turpin. More photos in gallery under events.

FOREST (DIV 1) VS Berwick United
2-0 – S. Grant, S. Bahar
In the latest round of league
matches the Forest came up against Berwick United. Unlike past
weeks the boys started reasonably well and had a couple of early
chances. Pete Strajner had a header come back off the crossbar
after good work down the right by Bernie Herrok. The boys
continued to pressure the Berwick defence as Strajner drew a foul
just outside the box. From the corresponding free kick Shaun Grant
stepped up to hit a hard low shot which despite the keeper’s
outstretched grasp went in off the post to open the scoring for
the Forest. Both teams created chances in the remainder of the
half but the game finished 1-0 at halftime. The boys again started
brightly in the second half passing the ball around a lot better
and looking very solid at the back with sweeper Frank Disario and
captain Darryl Scott keeping things under control. A flowing move
down the left saw the Forest earn a corner which was swung in by
Ryan Cassidy. Grant rose above the defence to head the ball back
across goal where Sy Bahar was on hand to score the easiest of
goals. The game became a bit ill tempered after that with players
from both sides becoming a bit animated. The referee kept well
having to unfortunately send off one the Berwick players for
abusive language. Despite the man advantage for the last 15
minutes the boys could not add to their score and ran out winners
2-0. A deserved win by the boys who regain their place on top of
the ladder. Next up is 3rd placed Casey who will be out
to avenge their resent cup defeat at the hands of the Forest.
Exceptional Club Person
Emily
Scott from the U16 Girls
completed training at 8:15 on a dismal Thursday evening and
arrived at the car very wet and muddy
on June 19th.
She took a while to remove her boots and get organised and by the
time we were ready to head off, everyone else was on the way. To
my dismay, my battery failed me and we were stuck out on the road.
There was a 2 hour wait for the RACV so I arranged a tow truck – a
minimum 60 minute wait.
A
while later a car stopped and the driver offered help, or to wait
with us, but I thanked him and said we were happy to wait for the
tow truck. The car drove off, only to return minutes later with a
strong torch and jumper leads. We were extremely grateful. The
gentleman, who I believe to be Hans Damen coach of the U/10
Rockets, and his daughter Emma stood out in the rain and fired us
up. We arrived home at 9:40 with our faith in the good nature of
our community restored!
Although I have emailed Hans, we would love to thank the family
through the website if this is possible as we think this is a good
news club story!
Warm regards

Bring on the MUD June 21st
The clubs wet weather experience shone through on Saturday as our
players reveled in the mud with 9 home wins and a draw in dismal
conditions. The U13 Gunners had their first win in convincing
fashion as did our U14 Stingrays though that was away. 3-0 was the
order of the day with the Mens Hoods doing it in multiples of 5
and thrashing Crossway 15-0 despite playing one short due to cup
tie commitments. Hornets, Power and Sharks all continued their
amazing undefeated runs and the Mens 1st Division team over ran
tough opposition to run out convincing 5-2 winners over Casey
Spirit. The only poor note from the day being some poor behaviour
exhibited to a couple of our female referees from opposition
officials. From my view point once again our referees were
extremely fair and competent and my only critisism would be they
need to check their whistles work as well in the wet weather as
the dry. The U16 Girls Sparx continued their improved performance
with a strong 8-0 victory over Boronia with Alex Gardner scoring a
hat trick. Whilst undefeated U11 Juggernauts were unable to upset
league leaders Ringwood drawing 2-2.
U12 Bears
In rainy
conditions the U12 Bears started well against Glen Eira. Both
wingers, Zac Luecke and Alex Murray, put pressure onto the
opposition from the first minute on. The game had hardly started,
when a Glen Eira defender bundled Liam Stauber over. The
subsequent penalty was calmly converted by Lochie MacLean, who has
not missed one in living memory. Nice passes from the midfield by
Kane Angulo, Michael Park and Jon Marshall kept the pressure up. A
well centred cross by Zac found Liam in front of the goal for an
easy tap in. Shortly after the same player scored his second by
lobbing the ball into the far corner of the goal for a well
deserved 3-0 half time result. The defence, well marshalled by
Ahren Angulo and Adam Doolan, was little tested. In driving rain
everybody expected to see a second half in the same mould. Some
changes occurred and the midfield was now well run by Max Gates
and Paul Torsello. In the middle of the half, the defence lost
some of its previous focus and the Glen Eira team managed to pull
two goals back. It suddenly looked a bit uncomfortable. Thyler
Argoon in goal stayed focused and held well. Shortly after, the
nerves were calmed again, as Michael ran through the opposing
defence to ensure the final 4-2 win. 7 wins in a row has the
second placed Bears well positioned for the upcoming crunch
matches against the two top teams. Well done boys!
Sherbrooke
U14 Girl Saphyrz
It is said that ‘pride comes before a fall’, and this certainly
was true of the past two games for the Saphyrz. After a strong
draw against the top team Peninsular the previous week, the
Saphyrz stumbled their way to a 1-1 draw against bottom of the
ladder team Brighton.
From the first whistle the Saphyrz were not
‘switched on’ and looked slow, indecisive and often second to the
ball. They had the majority of the play, but rarely put together a
chain of passes that found their target.
On a rare foray into our defensive half a lobbed shot from a
Brighton player was allowed to bounce in the penalty box, past our
keeper and into the net. So we went into half time 0-1 down!
There was a heated address by the coaches
during the break and changes were made to the line up. We started
with a defender as the main forward and key players on the bench.
Soon after the restart of play we scored with a well struck shot
and we looked to be on the way. Although
the Saphyrz enjoyed almost all the play in the second half (our
keeper touched the ball twice), the girls could not find a way to
get the second goal and the game ended with a disappointing 1-1
draw. Special mention should be made to
‘Princess’ Leah Cody who tried her best in defence and attack,
‘Big Bad’ Rachel Bourke who ran all day and scored the goal with a
lovely left-footer (the practise is paying off!), and Ella
‘Terminator’ Furniss who was the hardest working player on either
team and covered well for her team mates.
Also, it is great to see so many parents along
to support their girls and the team.
Although it was a game we should
have won, it was good that a draw enabled us to stay in second
place on the ladder. Now the Saphyrz have a chance to show what a
great TEAM they are and play their best soccer next weekend.
PARRY SHIELD ¼ FINAL
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Casey Spirit
5-2 – S. Bahar 3, R. Cassidy 2
In the ¼ final of the Parry Shield the
Forest came up against Casey Spirit. This was always going to be a
tough test and after yet another slow start the boys found
themselves 2-0 down after just 20 minutes. The deficit seemed to
wake the boys up though and they started to get back into the
game. Pete Strajner unfortunately squandered a couple of guilt
edged chances to score but just before half time the Forest got
the goal they had worked hard for when Ryan Cassidy got on the end
of a flowing move through the midfield to finish well. 2-1 to
Casey at halftime. Eddie gave the boys a serious talking to at
halftime which again had the desired affect as the boys played
probably their best 45 minutes of the season. They peppered the
goals at the start of the half but again failed to capitalize on
some excellent chances. With 15 minutes gone the boys got their
goal when Shaun Grant played in Sy Bahar to round the keeper and
score showing great composure. The Forest continued to pile on the
pressure when Grant again played the through ball this time to
Strajner to slide the ball past the goalie and Bahar finished it
off with the ball unluckily stopping in the mud. The Forest’s lead
was almost wiped away immediately when Casey’s top scorer was sent
through on goal but a brilliant last gasp tackle from skipper
Darryl Scott came to their rescue. The boys were determined not to
be denied and Bahar completed his hat trick after some great work
down the left by Strajner. The route was complete when Cassidy
took advantage of the loose ball after a long range shot by Grant
was well saved by the Casey goalie. An excellent 5-2 win to the
boys who will look to regain their spot on top of the ladder next
week against Berwick United.
June 29th
2008
Weekend of June 14th
The front runners in the U12 league both dropped important points
on the weekend allowing the league to be left wide open as we
reach the half way mark. Power were held to a 1-1 draw at home to
last years champions Knox whilst Pumas were very fortunate to come
away with a point against league newcomers Eltham when they
received a penalty for a dangerous play offense (normally an
indirect free kick) and evened the score late in the second half.
The U15 Terriers threw down the gauntlet in their league when they
knocked off league leaders Nth Blackburn 2-1and closed the space
between themselves and the top. Apart from this results didnt
really go our way this week with even our undefeated U8 Hornets
only managing a draw. Sunday was a day of dragging youngsters out
of bed to referee. No ref showed for the first 3 games at Menzies
nor the game at Emerald so both Josh Newman and Danny Ceeney got
wake up calls and a warm up prior to their 3.00pm U16's match to
referee these games. The U14 Girls Lasers scored their first win
of the season against Brighton whilst the U14 Saphyrz continued
their good form drawing 0-0 with top team Peninsula. The U16 Girls
also rounded of a good day for our girls teams with an outstanding
14-0 victory. Jessie Gilbert-Hunt coming back from last seasons
knee reconstruction to score a handful whilst talented youngster
Nicole Perfect bagged four.
Weekend of June 7th
The U14C Saphyrz girls continued their
amazing winning streak defeating top team Baxter 1-0. Despite
being somewhat flat according to their coaching staff their
excellent on field structure held them in good stead in the first
half to go in 1 goal up. In the second half they had to withstand
a spirited response from Baxter but both Alexa Allan in the
sweeping roll and goal keeper Adelaide Leggett were
impassable on the day and eventually the Saphyrz wrestled back
control to topple the league leaders. At Menzies the U18 Tiagos
took on Nth Caulfield and lost by a scrambled goal in the first
half. The Tiagos seemed to lack desire and were often second to
the ball in a performance I am sure they wouldn't have been happy
with for the day. Brian Martin and Dean Mercer in defence plus
some gutsy keeping from Jordan Currie were the bright lights that
saved the Tiagos bacon on numerous occassions.
U12 Bears vs Lalor June 8th
Stretching the definition of “eastern
division” to extremes, the U12 Sherbrooke Bears were on the road
to Thomastown to play an unheralded Lalor team. The Bears got off
to a good start, with Michael Park cleverly deceiving the defence
to cut through and then beat the goalie with a deft shot. One gaol
up after a few minutes, the Bears were creating numerous
opportunities but lacked finishing touches. Liam Stauber and
Michael (again) had good chances but the final shot went wide or
was deflected by a Lalor goalie who was putting everything into
his work. Lalor’s defence also appeared top-heavy with numbers,
and the crowded goal square began to frustrate the Bears who
needed to show more patience. Thyler Argoon in goal was rarely
troubled, although he was called upon to make one save and showed
good composure to leave his line at the right time. The Angulo
twins were again prominent, dominating the centre of the pitch and
holding their own against physical Lalor opposition. Max Gates
also had a strong half, although his run when last man in defence
put Leo’s heart in his mouth - even if Max did make it all the way
to the goalsquare! With the ball spending most time in the Lalor
half, however, Sherbrooke should really have gone in to their
halftime oranges with 2 or 3 additional goals. In the second half
Lalor began to sniff an upset and redoubled their efforts, with
some physical clashes creeping in and penalties going to both
sides on different occasions. Johnathan, Lachlan and new player
Paul – a Pumas draftee – held things together well in midfield and
defence, whilst upfront Zach Lueke – recovered from a first half
blow that saw him taken off – was combining well with Nic
Broomhead on the left. It was this combination and some good work
from Michael that saw Nic score the important second goal midway
through the half to give the Bears some breathing space. Adam
Doolan moved to centre forward for the latter stages and was
almost rewarded after a great run, the ball curving just past the
post, before Liam added the final goal with a good strike. 3-0 was
a satisfying result, but with no real standout players the coaches
player of the day was Max Rechner, showing great team spirit to
make the journey to support his teammates ( broken arm healing
well!).
U16 Pythons
Pythons unfortunately lost 3-0 to Whitehorse in a
tuff game. It was one of those games where the score did not
reflect the true game. Pythons successfully managed to have at
least 75% possession of the ball in the first half and desperately
deserved a goal. There were many attempts, but none would
actually see the back of the net. The 2nd half saw the
boys come out and continue with their best efforts, but
unfortunately some lucky goals saw Whitehorse take away the
points. Great efforts by Lachy, Jack, Jacco and James H who
continued to tackle and be first to the ball. Well done guys,
keeping training hard!
June 14th
2008
Weekend of May 31st/June1st
It has been a very tumultous week for our club on the field and I
feel compelled to remind our members about our codes of conduct.
Our committee will have many issues to deal with this Tuesday and
unfortunately some will relate to conduct. In a disgraceful
display by our Mens 5th Division team The Hoods, four players were
shown the Red Card. This is a totally unacceptable outcome and
needless to say will result in serious repercussions for
individuals, the team and maybe the club. On Sunday we had a
situation at the U16 girls game whereby two girls got into a
physical altercation resulting in parents and Marshalls invading
the field. Needless to say the referee had no other alternative
but to abandon the game. I cant actually remember a Sherbrooke
game being abandoned at least not in the last 5 years for any other
reason than weather. The resultant outcome was that the passport
of the wrong girl was taken and may now miss games for something
she didnt do plus a probable tribunal call up for our club. The
only positive note of this situation was that it seems none of our
supporters were involved
in the pitch invasion. We also had the situation where a
supporter was asked to leave the ground at the U16 Pythons match
by the referee. There are currently motions being put
forward to bring in very stringent punishments for lack of control
of supporters, players and officials that can result in club
expulsion very quickly. It is imperative we tone down our passion
and concentrate on the soccer and the ball not on opposition
players, supporters or referees.
U12 Pumas
The Pumas clawed their way back
into contention for the U12 league when they demolished 3rd
placed Nth Blackburn raptors 4-1. Alex Webb was outstanding in
goal whilst the central line strength from Adam Doolan , Brodie
Curry and Michael Parks meant the Raptors main striker was often
pushed wide. Fletch Field had another excellent game and
repelled multiple attacks down the right. It was a a far more
physical performance from the Pumas who copped a couple of blood
lips in the warm up from their own players. Both Tim and Justin
seemed inspired by their early cuts however with Tim having a
goal disallowed and Justin going on to score a hat trick.
Ladies
The Ladies team travelled to Healesville to try and avenge the
horrific 0-3 performance in the cup two weeks previous. It was
obvious they had come to play when Tanya Newman broke through the
defence and blasted her shot straight into the keeper before Jess
O' Brien followed up to slot home the first goal of the match.
Healesville though were not be out done and their sharpness in the
middle of the park allowed them to clip a soft goal of the inside
edge of the pole to equalize. They then followed this with a good
left foot shot from wide outside the box after Sherbrooke failed
to clear the ball when the chance presented itself. Sherbrooke
continued to pressure however though the theme of kicking straight
at the keeper continued. In the second half after continual
pressure a hand ball resulted in a Sherbrooke penalty which Perri
slammed at the keeper. The rebound was again slammed at the keeper
which finally rebounded to Stella to equalize. Shortly thereafter
a bouyed Sherbrooke took the lead when Nikki scored with her left
from just inside the box. The Ladies then soaked up heaps of
pressure until Nikki had the chance to seal it after she broke
through the defence and yes you guessed it hit it straight at the
keeper. This resulted in a tremendous defensive 15 minutes where
the Ladies withstood heaps of pressure before holding on to season
inspiring 3-2 win. My suggestion for training this week? Shooting
whatelse!!
U16 Panthers
I think these boys should be called the heartbreakers. Two
weeks previous with a seemingly unassailable 3-1 lead over league
leaders Croydon the snatched a draw from the Jaws of victory.
Today they had the chance to take top spot by rewarding their
distraught parents and coaching staff with the win they should
have got. However the team that is certainly good enough to win
the league again failed to play 90 minutes of football and didnt
start until after the 10 minute mark when they were already 0-3
down to three very soft goals. Despite the very poor start they
had enough good chances to go in half time 4-3 up except for some
outstanding goalkeeping by the Croydon keeper. At 1-3 down half
time passed and again the boys piled on the pressure but to for no
reward as the goalkeeper repelled them time and time again. Mark
Howard gave them excellent drive out wide whilst Glenn Brown
continued the fine defensive form he showed mid week in the inter
schools competition. However Croydon eventually got a forth after
a poor goalkick was snapped up by the opposition midfield. The
Panthers continued to try however and were eventually rewarded
with an own goal seemingly the only way to get past their keeper.
No doubt the coaches and parents will again come next week
hopefull their team will one day start playing for the full 90
minutes and get the rewards they are capable of achieving.
U14 Girls
Saphyrz
Sherbrooke Rangers V Brandon Park
“Woo hoo, shake your butt, woo hoo, shake your butt”! That was cry
that echoed across a foggy Freeway Reserve, as the U14 Saphyrz
celebrated their win over Brandon Park with their traditional
victory song!
After a lacklustre
opening 10-15 minutes, Alexa ‘boom boom’ Allan was brought on to
strengthen the defence. Immediately, we were more confident in
attack with Taylah ‘leftie’ Sheppard providing Elise ‘Viduka’
Milner and Rachel ‘the racehorse’ Bourke with scoring
opportunities.
Then the floodgates
opened with three goals in 10 minutes from Taylah, Elise and
Eilish ‘the athlete’ Devers.
The
second half began with sustained pressure from Brandon Park, but
each attack was repelled with vigour from Serise ‘Princess’ Benc,
Celeste ‘CC’ Collings, Sarah ‘Deano’ Deane and Alexa. Our keeper,
Adelaide ‘Amazon’ Leggett, owned the 18 yard box!
Ella ‘the
dominator’ Furniss provided great coverage in the defensive
midfield position, and Lani ‘motorbike’ Hallam and Jo ‘tenacious’
Brown ran all day.
After a physical
game, the Saphyrz eventually won the game 3-0. Eilish was voted
the best player, with every player contributing to the strong win. What a season it has
been for the Saphyrz – a courageous loss in the 1st
game, followed by two unlucky draws and now three strong wins in a
row.
As the girls become
more confident we are sure to hear more of ‘woo hoo, shake your
butt’ as the season progresses!
U10 Rockets
And so it was that the U10 Rockets found themselves in Blackburn
to play against the Jedis on a beautiful Saturday morning.
The teams were evenly matched in
the first half with the game going up and down the field in an
even manner. However the Jedis managed to sneak a couple of goals
passed our otherwise well performing first half goalkeeper, Josh
Hogben. Lack of solid clearances from defence were to blame for
the two soft goals. Watching the ball rather than making it your
own, caused a lot of unnecessary ball loss and we also failed to
put some opportunities away, leaving us 2-0 down at the break.
After a stirring half time speech
by coach Hans Damen, and a more attacking line up, the boys threw
themselves into the second twenty minutes.
Shaun Allen dropped into his
leading central defenders role, and organised the boys there. And
we can see how Isaac Van Rossen is descended from 16th century
Dutch warlord Maarten Van Rossum (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maarten_van_Rossum),
his clearing shots from defence would have cleared the walls of
any besieged city. Chris Heckenberg played a more aggressive
midfield role feeding a rotating series of attackers. We of course
have to mention Tanner Bayley's hard work up front chasing down
balls. Jake Breukel and Cody Karsikas came up from midfield to
assist in the attacks.
This leaves me with a small Rockets boy who deserves a special
mention, Alan Damen. From his attacking midfield position you'd
expect to find him up front sometimes, and yes, he was there on
the left, as well as on the right, as well as on the midfield, as
well as helping out in defence. So it wasn't surprising that Alan
scored the first goal, just after we resumed at half time.
Intercepting a defensive clearance Alan was left alone in front of
the goalie, who was left to retrieve the ball from the net. Oh,
yes and then he tapped in the second goal after the goalkeeper
parried a shot from Tanner. Oh, and then his attempted cross from
the right drifted into the goal for his hat-trick. The Jedis
quickly changed their goalkeeper, but to no avail, because Alan
shot from distance to take his tally to four.
And so it was that the Rockets
beat the Jedis 4-2 in Blackburn on a sunny autumn morning. Well
Done Rockets, good passing, good persisting. Well Done Alan for
doing exactly those things, and scoring goals on top of it all.
Go Rockets!!!!!
FOREST (DIV 1) VS Dandy Casuals
2-1 – R.
Cassidy, S. Grant
In the latest round of games the Forest came up against Dandy
Casuals. It was evident through their warm up that the opposition
had come to play and the Forest where totally dominated in the
first half. It was without a doubt the boys worst 45 minutes for
the season and this reflected on the scoreboard as they went into
half time 1-0 down. It could have been more if not for some dogged
defending and 1 fine reflex save by goalkeeper Mario Korporaal.
Thanks to an inspiring team talk from coach, Eddie the boys began
playing like league leaders. They started knocking the ball around
a lot better through the midfield and the chances where beginning
to come. Pete Strajner had a great run down the left but Ryan
Cassidy couldn’t capitalize on his cross shooting straight at the
goalkeeper. The boys did however get the equalizer they deserved
when after some neat play through the midfield by Shaun Grant and
Frank Disario the ball fell kindly to Cassidy who chipped the
keeper brilliantly. The boys now had their tails up and began
dominating possession in search for the winning goal. Syahrian
Bahar was working tirelessly up front and Bernie Herrok was doing
a great job breaking down the Casuals attacks. With 5 minutes to
go the ball got played out to Disario on the left who skipped past
the defender to deliver a perfect cross for Grant to head home
decisively. The relief could be seen across all the player’s faces
as they had shown great spirit to fight back to win the game 2-1.
Not their best performance of the season but as they’ve shown in
the past the Forest had a never say die attitude and continued to
take all in their stride in division 1. A couple of weeks off will
do the players the world of good and they’ll be raring to go in
their next match which is the quarter finals of the Parry Shield
on June 21st.
U12 Bears
The U12 Bears rode their luck against Richmond this week and
escaped with a 1-0 victory. It was a tight match, with neither
side giving any latitude and strong defence and robust challenges
the main feature. Thyler Argoon continues to grow in confidence as
goalie in his first season, and during the first half made a
number of excellent saves whilst Kane Angulo, playing a new
position on the right wing, was also prominent in the first half.
However, the Bears attack was unable to take advantage of
opportunities in front of goal, and went in 0-0 at halftime. In
the second half the tight struggle continued, with the Bears
midfield of Ahren Angulo and Alex Murray working hard. As both
teams tired the match began to open up and Richmond were very
unlucky not to score after a goal mouth scramble, the final shot
rolling languidly past an open goal after desperate defence from
Thyler, Max Gates and Adam Doolan. In attack for the Bears U/11’s
Juggernauts draftee Ewen was proving more than up to the challenge
and making promising raids into the Richmond half, showing
excellent speed and ball control. Just as a draw seemed a likely
result, it was an error from the Richmond goalie (faultless up to
this point) after some sustained Bears pressure that saw the ball
presented to Liam Stauber with an open goal and mere minutes left
on the clock. For the second week running Liam slotted home the
decider and kept the Bears in touch with the league leaders.
Player of the match, backing up from the previous U/11s match, was
Ewen Doonan.

Weekend of May24th/25th
U10 Rockets
The U10 Rockets played at home against the Lilydale Eagles, and
for the second week in a row Joshua Hogben managed to keep a
clean sheet while being in goal in the first half. This could
also be due to the fact that the ball didn't even get on to the
Rockets defensive side of the field in the first half (and only
a couple of times in the second half).
However having possession for
90% of the game does not necessarily mean you win. You may have
Chris Heckenberg sweeping the ball forward from midfield, you
may have Alan Damen crossing in consistently from the right
flank, you may have Cody Karsikas working tiredly in midfield,
you may even have Isaac Van Rossen and Shaun Allen taking shots
at goal, it all comes to no good if it rebounds against a wall
of 10 Lilydale players in their own goal square. It started 0-0,
it finished 0-0, but if you play a game where even the referee
says that the Rockets play extremely mature football for an U10
team, you can't really complain. The spectators sure didn't!
Positive talk on the field
encouraged passing between the players. With Tanner Bayley
coming up from defence and Shane Deane's quick throw-ins, we
gave ourselves all the chances we could. Too bad Alan's shot
from range was just saved on the line, too bad Will Farrow's
header didn't make it. The Rockets had a good game and that
counts. Well done
Eagles, well done Rockets, "Go Rockets"!
Under 12 Bears
The Sherbrooke Under 12 Bears were away to
Bulleen for a much-anticipated clash. Still short some key
players, the Bears were able to prevail in a tough match against
a well-organised team. Sherbrooke had much the better of the
first half, Zach Lueke starting with customary pace to regularly
cut through and Liam Stauber lurking dangerously in the centre.
Even so, committed Bulleen defence kept the Bears out and as the
half went on Bulleen began to make some raids of their own.
Thyler Argoon was called on to make a couple of important saves,
but in the main the Bears defensive line held firm with Adam
Doolan, Lachlan Maclean and Ahren Angulo proving too tough a nut
to crack. Kane Angulo was also prominent in midfield, and the
sight of the Angulo twins regularly taking the ball off the
opposition and sending it downfield was no doubt confusing and
frustrating for the Bulleen opposition. Late in the half the
Bears again began to take the upper hand and after a scramble in
the penalty box it was Matt (?) – an under 11 Sherbrooke Jet
drafted in to help the depleted Bears – who found the back of
the net for a deserved team goal. Halftime at 1-0 up and the
talk from the coach (and tense sideline parents) was of making
more of opportunities. Bulleen started the second half strongly,
however, and a well-worked move from a corner saw a speculative
cross lob in spectacular fashion into the Sherbrooke net. At
1-1, the match was in the balance. Bulleen grew in confidence in
attack and looked certain to move ahead, but desperate chasing
and defence from Max Gates, Jonathan Marshall and Ahren Angulo,
with Thyler also working hard, kept the scores level. Max was
able to negate his dangerous opponent, the Bulleen captain, with
a tireless display. A draw was a distinct possibility but
Sherbrooke clearly had the better of the latter stages, pressing
constantly and creatively for the decisive goal with Michael
Park proving especially dangerous. Then with less than two
minutes to go Nic Broomhead was able to break clear on the left
and centre a weighted pass towards Michael, who let it travel
through to Liam Stauber who made no mistake for his second goal
in as many weeks. A high quality match ended 2-1 and signalled
the Bears as a threat in this competition.
FOREST (DIV 1) VS KNOX CHURCHES FORCE
1-0 – S. Bahar
In the top of the table clash over the weekend the Forest came
up against undefeated Knox expecting their toughest game yet.
The first half saw just that as both teams attempted to take a
strangle hold of proceedings. It took some fine defending by
whole back line and some excellent saves by Mario Korporaal to
keep the Forest in it early and despite having a few half
chances the score remained at 0-0 at halftime. The Forest really
came out to play though in the second half and began knocking
the ball around a lot more fluently. Chances came and went for
both sides but no one could manage to break the deadlock.
Eventually after their tireless persistence the Forest got the
goal they worked so hard for when Syahrian Bahar capitalized on
some hesitant defending to finish well. This sent the Forest
players and supporters into hysterics knowing the importance of
getting all 3 points. More solid defending and great endeavour
by all players saw the Forest hold out for the result they
desired. An excellent hard fought effort by the Forest boys who
retain their position on top of the ladder.
U16’s Pythons
Congratulations to the Pythons team who savoured and enjoyed
perhaps the best victory they have ever achieved! A 2-1 win
against one of their arch rivals; Bulleen at their own home
ground!
These young men were hungry from the minute the whistle was
blown and everyone of them knocked around the ball like true
professionals. They commanded this game from start to end
showing talent, skill and stamina. The coaching team made many
changes throughout the game allowing the forwards and mid
fielders rest where possible. The first inspiring goal was
scored by Josh W with a perfect chip over the goalie, which took
the team to a 1-0 score at half time. Early in the second half
saw Jacco score our 2nd fantastic goal, scoring along
the ground and into the far post. Pythons were up 2-0 and
Bulleen desperately needed to rescue some dignity. Our defence
come under further attack after Bulleen scored their only goal
which gave them a sniff at winning, but our backline stood up to
the challenge lead by Tom’s reliable consistency, Lachy’s
fantastic blocking, great tackling & running by Jake and Josh
N’s relentless first to the ball attitude. Jack W was back
from injury and had a fantastic game showing true grit thru the
middle! James L, Callum, Jordan, and Jacco’s skilled ball work
and passing was magical to watch, which allowed plenty of
pressure up front by forwards James H, and Josh W. Mark showed
some great skill and took on his opponents with confidence
allowing Josh W to rest after some hard running. Danny ensured
no more goals were scored, enjoying a return to his former role
as goalie with Jeremy still out injured. Special thanks goes to
Joris who remained on the bench should he be needed. Thank you
also to Paul who assisted coaching the boys (while Ed flew back
from Benny’s game at Moe). This was an inspiring game and we were
all so proud of you – well done!

MATCH REPORT:
FOREST (DIV 1) VS EASTERN UNITED
0-1
Over the weekend the Forest came up against rival Eastern United,
in what proved to be possibly one of the most one sided games you
will see. Eastern started well looking the brighter of the 2 sides
in the first 10 minutes. Their fast paced approach to the game
seemed to raise the game of the Forest who then started taking
control of proceedings. A catalogue of chances followed with a
long range effort from Shaun Grant unluckily coming back off the
crossbar with Ryan Cassidy also striking the post after a good
run. Top scorer, Pete Strajner was being double teamed by the
Eastern defense and Bernie Herrok had a header that went narrowly
over. Halftime 0-0. The Forest domination continued into the
second half with the ball rarely entering their defensive area.
Chance after chance came and went for the Forest; Grant had
another header smack against the crossbar epitomizing what was to
prove not to be their day. An unfortunate lapse in concentration
at the back with 5 minutes to go saw the Eastern winger through on
goal and roll the ball past helpless goalkeeper Mario Korporaal.
This proved to be the winning goal for Eastern handing the Forest
their first loss of the season. A disappointing day for the boys
but they will be looking to pick themselves up in the 2nd
round of the Parry Shield this weekend against Nth Blackburn.
Under 12 Bears Match Report Round 3 VS
North Caulfield
Searching for their first win of the season, the Bears got off to
a flying start. Good pressure by
U16’s Pythons
Unfortunately we went down to Nunawading 4-0 with at least 2
of their goals being nothing to rave about, having been scored at
the 30sec mark and the 4th minute mark. From then on
we were playing catchup, with the score at half-time being
Nunawading up 2-0. The pressure was on most of the 1st
half with Nunawading having most of the attacks. The defence was
certainly put under pressure however we did have some good
defensive play from Josh N (coming off with some stud marks), Callum, James L and Lachy. Callum had a close chance from a long
way out with three other shots also close when were in the forward
line. Nunawading capitalized on their corners more than we did in
the first half which assisted their offensive play (3-Nun,
2-Sherbrooke). A few changes by Eddie in the 2nd half
sparked a new ball game. We were more aggressive and looked very
dangerous when he had a penalty shot inside the box. Josh W had a
chance to make his mark, but it wasn’t to be today (Josh keep
you’re head up mate, as their goalie who was also their captain
was brilliant & prevented us from scoring all day, he certainly
was MVP on the day) James H showed great body work again in the
midfield with Jacco, and Josh N providing some great runs thru the
middle. James L was competitive and more involved in the 2nd
half. Danny provided some good running up front and even had a
close shot at goal. Jordan provided some good support out on the
wing making some good runs with Mark. Tom did well as last man and
showed terrific courage getting to the ball first on many
occasions. Unfortunately Jeremy took a nasty knock to his leg,
who was already carrying an injury to the same leg. Danny was
excited to wear the goalie shirt for the last five minutes of the
game, with Sherbrook outnumbering their opponents in corners to
keep the pressure on (3-Sherb, 2-Nunaw). However, Nunawading were
able to score another 2 goals in the 2nd half. Well
done boys, still early days, keep your heads up.

Weekend Results May 3rd/4th
A poor weekend for all our Seniors with the
exception being the Forest who continue taking all in their stride
by beating last years 1st Division Premiers Mitcham 3-2. All
other teams though at home lost their matches. An unfortunate mix
up with the Arrows and Hoods resulted in two players not playing
for either team which probably cost at least one of our Div 5
teams some points and keeps this Division wide open at this stage
of the season. The U12 Power continue to live up to their name
crushing Eltham 8-0 and have already scored more than 20 goals in
only 3 matches. The U8 Hornets continue their unbeaten run
defeating our U8 Hawks whilst new team U11 Jackeroos were very
unlucky to go down 1-0 to Mooroolbark.
May 3rd
2008
We had a full round of VCSA and FFV matches over
the weekend with some very good results plus a few upsets. The
Div1 Mens Forest continued there excellent form beating serious
contenders Morrison 2-1 in an exciting match whilst the Hoods
continued to win despite struggling to field 11 again with a 4-1
win. The Arrows suffered a shock 2-3 loss whilst the Ladies lacked
enthusiasm in their disappointing 0-3 loss to Mooroolbark. The U12
Pumas despite fielding the bare eleven managed to back up their
form against last seasons champions Knox with an exciting 3-2 win
inflicting only the 3rd loss for Knox in the past 3 seasons. Alex
Webb was no less than outstanding in the Pumas goal saving several
one on ones throughout the game. The U16 Panthers had a point to
prove after last weeks debacle and won a high scoring affair 6-4
with many excellent goals and some excellent attempts including an
overhead kick by Josh Newman that was saved on the line. Newcomers
the Girls U11 Cannons started their soccer careers with a 3-1 win
at Emerald. The U16 Pythons started their season after being
pushed up to A grade against 3rd place finishers Richmond and
equipped themselves very well. After a very nervous start they
looked to have the better of Richmond most of the day but failed
to capitilize on their chances always leaving the door open and
giving Richmond a sniff. They probably didnt get enough width in
the first half and as a consequence didnt convert their dominance
into goal scoring opportunities. They were very strong in their
tackling however and put a lot of pressure on the Richmond defence
resulting in a high scoring win of 5-3. The only negative being
what seemed like a serious knee injury to the hard working
midfielder Jack Witzke. The U18 boys scared Bulleen in to not
turning up so recorded a disappointing 3-0 walkover.

Ist Round for Juniors and Senior Cup
As the junior Saturday leagues kicked off it was a
very mixed bag of results. The lack of training due to pitch
availability was obvious among many of the older teams who
performed below par. The U16 Panthers who really should be a
threat this season played very poorly and received a 0-7 scoreline
to match. The U10 Rockets had a cracker of a first game with Nth
Blackburn Monkeys and despite a hat trick from Alan Damen saw the
result go against them in the last three seconds going down 3-4.
The U12 Power continued the fine run that won them a Runners Up
flag last season with an 11-0 demolition of Nth Blackburn. Other
good results included a 5-1 victory to the U15 Terriers. In the
Seniors cup round Forest demolished Casey Spirit 8-0 whilst Arrows
came from behind to win 3-1. Friars lost their match 0-2 whilst
The Hoods drew 2-2. Yes if you are wondering how you can draw a
cup match so am i as unless it is a group stage event like the
Ladies competition the game must have a result. Its likely we will
hear more about this result in the future. The Ladies continued to
show the remarkable improvement displayed in their first two
matches and scored two goals in the first half to run out
comfortable winners against Mitcham. They displayed some fine team
skills through the match and were deserved winners.
April 19th
2008
Round of Senior Matches
The Senior teams continued in good form for the
second round. The Friars clocked up a second win on the trot 3-1
against Yarra Valley the Ladies lost 1-3 to an extremely strong
Berwick team which was a comendable performance. The Hoods again
had numbers problems and after being down 2 men for the first half
hour and going 0-2 down once they attained their full compliment
clawed out a 2-2 draw. The Arrows played on a very poor surface
and looked to have the game won when they went 5-1 up early in the
second half. Gabrielle Herrok in only his second match since
arriving from Brazil bagged 4 of the goals. Unfortunately a few
strange things then occurred with some bizzare referee free kicks
just out side the box when players said "let it run" that resulted
in one goal directly and one compliments of an own goal. Then a
soft penalty made it 5-4 and two scrambles off the goal line and 5
minutes of extra time saw the Arrows hold on to a desperate 5-4
win. The Forest demolished a weakened Donvale team 6-0 in a very
good team display and some nice teamwork. The Forest will get a
test next week when they play one of the big guns of the league
Morrison though the home draw will be a definite advantage.
FOREST VS DONVALE CANNONS
6-0 – P. Strajner 3, B. Herrok, F. Disario, D. Milne
After a hard earned victory in their first league match the forest
where looking to consolidate their good start. They came up
against Donvale Cannons and began the game brightly. Some quick
passing and positive running by all players resulted in 3 first
half goals to Bernie Herrok, Frank Disario and Pete Strajner.
Unfortunately for Donvale they only had the bare 11 players turn
up for the game and due to an injury to one of their defenders
late in the first half they were forced to play out the remainder
of the game with 10 men. Despite the man advantage the forest
didn’t become complacent dominating possession and banging in 3
more goals in the second half. Strajner helped himself to a
hat-trick thanks to some great delivery from the flanks and
through his constant endeavor. The pressure became too much for
the Cannons and new signing Dave Milne capitalized on some sloppy
defending to put the icing on the cake for the forest late on. An
overall fantastic performance by the whole team and an excellent
start to the season.
April 12th
2008
Round of Senior Matches
The first round of the
season started in unprecedented fashion with all 5 teams coming
away with victory. The Ladies came from behind at half time to
score a 2-1 win. They have been placed in 1st division this season
so it was great start to what promises to be tough year. The
winner an apparent stunner from Perri Gardner. In the Men's Friars
young gun Locky Boyd starred with 2 goals in a convince 4-0
victory. This game was somewhat marred by a send off for whom a
few weeks of line marking at Menzies Creek will be in store. The
Men's Hoods travelled to Mitcham with a bare eleven to come away
with a 4-2 victory. The Men's Arrows dominated their match with two
goals from Gabrielle Herrod and Cyril Moran in the last few
minutes. The score line not really reflecting the Arrows dominance.
Cyril Moran was outstanding in the midfield and easily the Arrows
best player with Willie Angulo a dominant force in defence. It was
disappointing not to get an official referee for the 1st Division
match and though Casey spirit started with ten they were at full
strength within 20 minutes. Forest dominated the first half and
went in 3-1 up though lack of match practice resulted in easy
misses that could have put the game beyond the opposition at half
time. Syahrian Bahar and Peter Strajner were causing Casey
substantial problems up front and Syahrians coolness in front of
goal was the telling factor in the end with two well taken goals.
The second half saw the fitness factor kick in and the pressure
mounted considerably. Mario Korporaal made two outstanding saves
to keep Forests nose in front and they eventually held on to a 3-2
victory.

Saturday 28th March
All practice matches
from the weekend went very well giving our Senior teams an
important hit out prior to the weekend start and some of our older
Junior Teams valuable practice. It was a treat to see some of our
outstanding young talent on display. One in particular was
outstanding. Matt Quay who has qualified for The National Scouting
Report and will be eligble to seek USA Sport scholarship programs
in the near future started the day with a wonderful hat trick for
the U18 Tiagos. He then backed this up with all four goals in the
Mens Arrows 4-2 win over Canterbury. An outstanding performance
for the first competitive outing of the season.

Coaches and Managers Meeting
Due to the early start
to the Mens and Ladies competition now scheduled for April 5th the
coaches and managers meeting will be brought forward to
March 31st Monday at 7.00pm at Menzies Creek Reserve. You
will be able to pick up Managers bags including 1st Aid kit, goaly
gloves, Managers books, match balls, coaches boards, game day
awards etc and be given a run down on the season ahead. It will be
your opportunity to ask questions on areas that you have queries
or concerns on. You will be given a run down on rosters, game
schedules, results notifications, insurance/injury claims, best
and fairest voting for U14's and up and many other tasks you
may have questions about. It is very important you attend and
bring any queries relating to registrations and passports as
players in the FFV will not be allowed to take the field this
season without a passport.

Working Bee
A big thank you to all
those that assisted in the working bee to erect goals, transport
portables and mark the pitches last Saturday. John Turpin, Eddie
Woishuk, Leo Webb and Leo Stauber cordinated the work with
assistance from Trevor Currie, Justin Murray and Mr Schmuki
Mueller. Thanks to these people the grounds should be ready for
action come the first matches of the season.

Registrations for Seniors
Due to the early start
to the Mens and Ladies competition now scheduled for April 5th the
deadline as stipulated by the VCSA for Mens registrations will be
March 15th. This means by March 13th I will need to post off all
relevant documentation. The club will not be registering any
player that hasn't paid or organized a suitable payment plan with
the Treasurer and hence could miss the first games if not
financial. New players require a photo, all players need to refill
in a VCSA registration form and students claiming the discount
need to supply a stat dec declaring " I am a full time student
earning no income". Note the change of strip for the ladies,
Forest and Arrows will mean they will require the clubs maroon
shorts and socks for this season.
March 4th
2008
Registrations
Due to constant growth of our club and our
limited facilities the club is forced to come up with a priority
system to ensure as many players as possible can be accommodated.
As a consequence we will be giving priority to players that commit
and hence register on a first come basis. We will do our best to
place people in their preferred teams but cannot guarantee this
especially to late registrations.
If you are faxing your rego forms
through dont forget to fill in the pledge form for Bendigo as its
not to late to get your free socks and ensure you tick a help box
on the form to help through the season. Pledge forms can be
collected from the Treasurer or Secretary.
PRE SEASON
TRAINING
The calendar has been updated on our website
and gives start days etc for competitions. The committee listing
is also updated so if you have questions etc you can
contact the relevant person and get a quick response. Training
will again be very disrupted through the drought and only runners
can be worn whilst training. There are severe restrictions pre
season and at this stage many teams doing pre season are training
at alternative venues. As this information is supplied it will be
placed on this page.

Australia VS Qatar
Congratulations to Benny Woischuk from the
U14 Sharks who was chosen to be a ball boy at the World Cup
Qualifier Australia vs Qatar on Wednesday night at the Telstra. What a
great honour and an occasion he will remember for the rest of his
life. Keep your eyes open on Wednesday as he said at the 42 minute
mark he would stand up and put his arms in the air so he can
be identified.

SUMMER
COMPETITON FINALS
After completion of the finals the ladders finished as displayed
below. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many
volunteers that assisted during the competition. The parents that
acted as team managers, the parents and players that assisted in
putting up the nets, cones and flags, the parents and players that
assisted as referees and the parents that assisted as canteen
helpers. Most importantly I would like to congratulate the players
on their exemplary behaviour all throughout the competition. To
mix so many kids of different ages and gender and have so few
problems is a credit to all that participated. Our club has a
reputation of friendliness and enjoyment when competing and that
was echoed throughout the past weeks. I would also like to thank
Holland, Cameroon and Egypt as there excellent organization before
matches made my job much easier. I am told the kids gave the
parents a bit of a lesson in skills during their match so
hopefully next year will see a big improvement from the parents. I
wish you all a safe and happy Christmas and hope to see you all at
registration day next February.

WARNAMBOOL TOURNAMENT
The club entered three
very strong teams in this years Warnambool 7 a side competition.
Our U11's went through the tournament undefeated and though being
the best team on the park in the final were unable to score that
all important goal. They lost the penalty shoot out 2-3 to
Sandringham and finished runners up. The U13's also went through
their qualifying matches undefeated but only managed a draw
against super league team Altona so were forced into a penalty
shoot out to see who would play the Second Altona team in the
final. They too lost their shoot out this time 1-2. The U16 team
played some awesome soccer in their qualifying rounds absolutely
demolishing all opposition scoring a minimum 5 goals in every
match. With no reserves however the test would be whether they
could maintain the run for the Final against a strong Warnambool
combination. As the game drew near to a close and Warnambool held
on to a 0-0 scoreline it seemed their fate too would be decided by
those horrible penalties. However justice prevailed and a glorious
little chip over the keeper gave the boys a great victory in the
dying minutes. Jordan, Josh N, Josh W., Chris, Alex, Jack and
Jacco were understandably excited and were still wearing their
gold medals around the caravan park at midnight that evening. For
Jacco Kerstens and Josh Newman it was understandably special as
they had won the tournament with our inaugural team back when they
were Under 8's. The talent on show from our club was extraordinary
and promises a bright future in years to come.

HOBART END OF SEASON TRIP
A big thanks to Shaun
Grant for organization of the trip which was enjoyed by all
attendees. The players were very well behaved and all got home
safely. A great deal of discussion went on about setting up a
draft system for the Mens teams and who should be in it and their
suitable rankings not to mention those for delisting. I am sure
JT's first air flight will be one he doesnt forget and is probably
best summed up by saying that all 240 passengers on board clapped
when the roller coaster ride finally finished with a safe touch
down at Hobart. All later flights on the night were sensibly
postponed.

VCSA Interstate Carnival
The recent VCSA Interstate
carnival finished last weekend with the U14's losing 2-6 to
Queensland, the U17s winning their tournament and the Ladies being
beaten in the final 1-2 by Queensland. The Men finished third.
Congratulations go to Tanya Newman who was selected in the All
Australian Representitive team for the Ladies after competing in
this tournament. This is an excellent achievement from a
Sherbrooke Girl that started playing as an U16 when only 13 years
old at our club.

Junior Presentation 2007
Congratulations to all
the players for 2007. Trophies were presented to all players up to
U13 level and medals to all those from U14 to U18. Winners and
Runners up medals were presented to the players of our Champion
and Runner teams.
Our major Individual award for the Rose Lee Award for 2007 was won
by Fabian Job with both Jacco Kerstens and Jordan Scott very
unlucky to miss out as excellent nominations. Top ten performance
medals were presented to Matthew Ferguson, Bailey Pater and Paul
McArdle from the U10's. Other Individual awards were presented as
follows:
VCSA Senior Presentation 2007
Congratulations to
Leighton Storey who topped off a great season for the Mens Hoods
with not only a Champions Medal but also the medal for the Best
Player in the League for Div 6. A tremendous effort for his first
season in senior soccer. Another first yearer in Pete Strajner was
pipped at the post in the Division 2 player of the year but should
be very proud of coming second in such a tough league boasting
some very talented players many of whom are in his own team.
September 16th 2007
VCSA Junior Presentation
There may be room to
question the quality of our playing surfaces but there is no room
to question the quality of our players as our club cleaned up big
time this season in both team and Individual awards. And though
our trophy cabinet is currently being organized I think an
extension to it is already on the cards. In the teams area:
CHAMPIONS FOR 2007
Mens Forest Div 2 - Won
their third consecutive title and will now play in Division 1 next
season.
Mens Hoods Div 6
- Won their inaugural
season undefeated. Made up of mostly last seasons U18's plus a few
experienced players will now progress to Division 5.
U13 Sharks
- Went through undefeated to
record back to back premierships.
RUNNERS UP FOR 2007
U11 Power -
Improved last seasons 4th position to take runners up in a very
even competition.
From the Individual point of view Sherbrooke had an outstanding
season with ten players ranked in the top 10 players in their
league and two of these winning most outstanding player of the
season.
BEST PLAYER FOR THE
VCSA FOR 2007
U11's VCSA Best Player
Brodie Currie
Brodie played for the
U11 Pumas and won 6 best on ground performances scoring a total of
27 points some 9 clear of his nearest rival. At eleven years old
Brodie plays team soccer comparable with most 16 year olds and is
a rare example of a very skilled young player that knows just when
to pass.
U15's VCSA Best Player
Joshua Newman
Joshua played for the
U15 Panthers got 4 best on ground performances and with 23 points
was 5 clear of his nearest rival. Josh is a perfect example of the
fact that size is not relevant to our sport as one of the smallest
players in the competition he now has had the honour of both
representation at State level as well as winning the leagues best
and Fairest.
VCSA Top 10
On top of our winners
we had 8 other representatives in the top 10 players:
Bailey Pater (U10 Juggernauts)
Mathew Ferguson (U10 Jets)
Paul McArdle (U10 Jaguars)
Joel Turpin (U11 Power)
Lachy Webb (U13 Stingrays)
Peter Jukic (U13 Sharks)
Benny Woischuk (U13 Sharks)
Lachlan Boyd (U15 Panthers)

More Champions
Though it took to the last match of the season two more
Championships were secured. The U11 Bears reversed a 0-4 loss
earlier in the season by beating Croydon 2-1 and winning the U11
Championship. Many of their games were decided by only one goal so
they have maintained excellent concentration and persistence
through the year to secure this well deserved flag which is back
to back for many of the players as well as their coach Leo Stauber.
The U12A Gypsyz over ran a depleted Brighton team to secure the
flag in the Girls Metro competition. It was an outstanding result
based on the fact that only a few weeks ago they were placed only
sixth and with results going their way and coming home with a wet
sail have outstayed all opposition to win their league and
highlight the quality of the young players we have coming through
our girls teams.
In other results the U15 Pythons demolished Croydon who beat the
top team the previous week by 7-1. After leading 5-0 at half time
the coach gave opportunities to some defenders to get a taste of
the forward positions to celebrate the end of the season. Jacco
Kerstens scored a hat trick in the first 20 minutes and by
securing 3rd spot will probably push themselves into the A grade
competition for next season. The U13C Saphyrz girls earned an
excellent 1-1 draw in their game against a team that thrashed them
8-0 earlier in the year demonstrating the massive improvement they
have made through the season.
The Under 11
Sherbrooke Bears had everything to play for in the final round
against Croydon City Arrows – the opportunity to clinch the
championship with a win, as well as to reverse a 0-4 loss at home
earlier in the season. The match was a high-quality affair from
start to finish. The Bears opened the scoring after only two
minutes when good work in midfield from Liam and Ahren gave an
opportunity to Max R, who again found the back of the net with a
sweetly timed strike. Croydon hit back quickly, however, with the
red-headed three-goal nemesis from their earlier encounter finding
space and a snoozing Bears defence to give keeper Isaac no chance
in a one-on-one situation. The Bears then tightened things up with
Adam, Sebastian and Lachlan working hard in defence to deny the
speedy Croydon forwards any opportunity. Nic and Kane again worked
well in tandem in attack on the left, but the crucial finishing
touches would not come against a physical Croydon defence. Zac had
one good opportunity before being fouled (earning the defender a
yellow card), but the rest of the half was an arm-wrestle with few
clear scoring chances. The second half saw the Bears begin to gain
some ascendancy with Max R and Zac both regularly slicing through
from their respective wings and Max G, Kane and Liam dominating
through the midfield despite a physical Croydon side that
definitely had the edge in size. Shots came off the cross bar,
just went wide, or were saved by a Croydon keeper who showed great
courage and skill. Finally Zac found himself in space from the
left and after skirting around a couple of defenders he beat the
keeper to claim the decisive goal. As nervous supporters chewed
their nails the Bears continued to repel Croydon’s attack with
Ayden’s mighty clearances from the back bringing some respite.
Finally the whistle blew and with it the Bears had secured the
championship for the second season running (last year in the VCSA,
this year in the FFV). Congratulations to all the team and coach
Leo for an outstanding effort, particularly through the middle of
the season when illness, injuries and unavailability meant the
team had to fight very hard to keep in contention. See you in 2008

Special Meeting
The special meeting was
held Monday 20th August 2007 and it was agreed unanimously that
talks with Monbulk Soccer Club regarding potential merger should
continue.
Round 17
Match report for the U/11 Bears vs
Richmond below: It was an early start for the
U/11 Bears as they went on the road to Richmond, a good hour
drive from the hills. Perhaps it was the long drive but the
first half saw the Bears armed with feet of clay and
concentration to match, with a dogged Richmond side defending
grimly and looking for a fast break attack to stretch the Bears
defence. Isaac in goal was the standout performer in the first
half, pulling off a number of excellent saves including a brave
dive at the feet of a charging Richmond striker. Adam and
Lachlan were also strong at the back during this period. In the
second half, the Bears woke up and began to attack with gusto. Nic and Kane worked the left side of the field well but were
unable to convert, and then Max Rechner and Liam combined on the
right with Liam’s pinpoint cross finding Nic unmarked on the
left wing. He calmly slotted home the Bears first goal. Max
Gates then struck a purple patch of running, twice slicing
through the Richmond defence for goals in the space of 5
minutes. The Bears did not add to their tally but played with
purpose and combination for the balance of the match, with all
players putting in a strong performance. Special mention to Max
Rechner for working himself to a state of exhaustion on the
right wing and always threatening, whilst Max Gates was the
player of the match for his two-goal haul. Next week the Bears
meet South Springvale and will be looking for revenge at home
and to stay in the lead at the top of the league ladder!

Round 14
A good round for our
teams chasing potential silverware. The Mens Forest disposed of
Knox 5-0 giving them a virtually unassailable lead in Div 2 whilst
a much friendly affair between our two Div 6 teams Hoods and
Friars saw the Hoods win 4-0 and give them a near unassailable
position in Div 6. The U13 Sharks demolished their main opposition
Kings 5-1 with an outstanding performance from sharp shooter
Bennie Woischuck scoring all 5 goals. Barring a major change of
form they would now be strong favorites for this league. The U11
Bears maintained their top position on the Sunday with another win
though goal difference may be a telling story in this league with
several tough matches ahead. The U11 Pumas did their chances of a
runners up trophy no harm by being the only team besides the Bears
last season to defeat Knox in convincing fashion 2-1 on Saturday.
The U15 Pythons beat rivals Clayton 3-2 and still leave open the
chance of a runners up medal though they will need to beat league
leaders Bulleen later in the season. The Mens Arrows kept their
slim hopes alive of a possible second place finish by beating
Blackburn 3-1 for their 5th consecutive win. They will need to
keep winning and require other results to go their way if this is
to happen. The Ladies team travelled to Werribee to play under
lights in two mini vans. The trip down was very entertaining from
the "Ladies" though the entertainment wasn't matched on the
ground. Despite playing the conditions reasonably well in the
first half and coming in with a 1-0 lead their second half was
their worst of the season conceding 3 goals. Perhaps their minds
were on the after match entertainment planned for Brunswick
Street. The U14 Terriers scored a convincing 10-0 win over Yarra
Valley and outstanding newcomers Emily and Oscar Hulbert starred
in their valiant attempt to beat Healesville going down 2-3
in the U10 Juggernauts. Emilys third game resulting in her third
best on ground performance and supported with a goal by her
younger brother.
The U11 Pumas played excellent team soccer against undefeated Knox
in the early stages of the game this Saturday. Excellent crosses
from Michael Parkes and Brodie Currie were very close to being
opening goals but just failing the necessary finishing touches.
Paul Torsello and Matt Gibby were playing very well in defence
negating the strong pushes of the Knox midfield. Justin Lowe in
goal cleaned up any loose through balls giving the team a lot of
confidence. However Knox are renowned for their excellent
finishing skills up front and when their right winger broke wide
on the right despite being forced wide he managed to power the
ball into the roof of the net to give Knox a 1-0 lead at half
time. The Pumas however felt they were playing better soccer and
came out all guns blazing in the second half. Several great
crosses went tantilizingly close before man of the match Theo
Thomas scored from the far right to really boost the Pumas. Knox
were under the pump and lucky to have a great header goal from
Justin disallowed for off side. Not to be denied Luke Sproules
casually side footed a corner in on the back post to give the
Pumas a well deserved 2-1 lead. There was still a sting in the
Knox tail when a through ball was allowed to continue despite
looking close to off side. Paul Torsello was off his line from
goal and did a great job in blocking what looked like a certain
goal and giving the Pumas a well deserved victory and a testament
to the excellent improvement since the start of the season.
Another cold day on top of the hill at Menzies Creek saw the U9
Rockets play against the mighty U9 Knox Churches team. They gave
us a couple of exciting matches last year in the U8's and this
year it was no different. Using one of our stronger line ups the
Rockets attacked consistently in the first half, and as always it
was the ever- and omni-present Chris Heckenberg who started the
scoring for the Rockets, 1-0 after about 5 minutes. However Knox
came back strongly and within a couple of minutes had equalised,
1-1 at the half time break. More of the same in the second half,
attacks and quality football from both teams, leaving both sets of
parents gasping for air. Sadly for us, but great for Knox, a long
range shot got both through our defense and the keeper, 1-2 for
Knox. It was a very entertaining game and showed that a team that
is on the attack every week still needs to spend an appropriate
time on their defensive skills and on their goalkeeping. Having
one star defender, Shaun Allen, is not enough. Come on Rockets;
thanks for the game Knox! The
U11 Bears started slowly against mid-table and home team
Manningham. During the first 10 minutes Manningham showed the
better organised football. Neither side created any worthwhile
chances. The Bears slowly started to take the initiative and
threatened over the wings. Shortly before half time the somewhat
fortunate goal fell. Lawrence had a great run over the wing and
crossed hard into the middle. The Manningham defender (under
pressure) panicked and buried the ball into its own goal. 1-0 was
the half time score. The second half was fairly even, with the
Bears having the better chances. The defence was again very solid
and the midfielders and attackers worked hard. Mid through the
second half Max G. passed onto Lawrence who had another great run.
Nobody could stop him and the 2-0 was the result. Shortly before
the end, Manningham broke through and had a great chance in front
to the keeper. Luckily the attacker shot over the goal. A last
good chance was missed by the Bears. A hard thought 2-0 win was
the outcome with Lawrence the well deserved player of the match.
U8 Falcons played U8 Foxes this weekend. The Falcons were slower
off the mark and paid the price letting in a rapid goal from a
great run down the wing. The Falcons replied equally quickly with
a speculative shot at goal that squirmed out of the goalies hands
into the net. Another goal for the Foxes followed soon after. The
game settled down into an even contest for a short while until
Falcons equalised again. After the initial flurry from the Foxes
their heads dropped, they lost shape and the Falcons pushed ahead
with three more unanswered goals. 5-2 to the Falcons. In fairness,
the Falcons were aided by Foxes players. The Falcons only had five
players so borrowed a Foxes player both halves. The unpredictable
Shredders were back on the winning track this weekend. Starting
the game two points above Lilydale Eagles it was important to get
a win to stop from dropping down the table. The Shredders added a
little 'Power' to the midfield and defence for
this game and re-shuffled positions a little. The game started
with the usual aggression and surging runs from the Shredders
which soon resulted in the opening goal. We have lost two of our
games despite scoring first so it was important not to lose
concentration. After resting our left back and moving another
player to cover that position, there was often too much
space available there and we were soon punished by three unmarked
players who ran through uncontested and forced the equaliser.
Quick re-shuffling solved the problem and the game settled into an
even contest for the rest of the 1st half. There were some good
chances not taken by the Shredders which left the game even at
half time. The second half started with quick passing and
movement from the Shredders. We really dominated the second half
with Lilydale relying on the long ball over the top with little
else in their repertoire. The Shredders defence kept shape, dealt
with the speculative long ball approach easily and were not really
tested. Our dominance was not reflected in the final 3-1 winning
scoreline. The Lilydale keeper made some outstanding saves when
one on one with each of our twin strikers. Add to that some poor
finishing and the score shows little of the many chances missed.
In reality our strikers should have had a hat-trick each. Let us
hope that our next match against free scoring, second placed
Healesville will see those missed goals go in!

Outstanding Club Talent
What our club lacks in
facilities it more than makes up for in talent as has been
exhibited recently.
Nikki Ceeney
Has been awarded an
athletic scholarship to play American Women's College Soccer and
study Exercise Science at the Freed Hardeman University in
Tennessee. She will leave for this placement in Mid August of this
year.
Nikki has twice won our clubs prestigious Rose Lee award and
started playing with our U16 girls team when she was 13. This
season she has been playing with the Eastern Lions in the Women's
Premier League as well as playing for Sherbrooke Ladies team on
Saturdays. As many of you know she also referees our Junior teams
on a Saturday Morning. We wish her all the best on her upcoming
adventure.
Cordelia Crosbie
Cordelia has just
been selected as Goalkeeper for the Victorian U12 Girls State team
in the FFV. She will represent Victoria in the National
Championships to be played later this year. Cordelia started with
Sherbrooke in the Goalkick competition some 4 years ago and
regularly plays in older age groups on the weekend. This is an
outstanding honour for one so young and signals an outstanding
career in the future.
Lauchlan Webb
Locky has just been
selected to represent Victoria in the VCSA U14 Victorian team to
play in the National competition at Morwell in October of this
year. Locky started with the U13 Stingrays back when the club
first entered the VCSA and like many of our talented players has
stuck it out in teams that were initially whipping boys in the
competition and have grown to be teams to be reckoned with on game
day. Locky though only an U13 has been playing in the U14 Tigers
on a Sunday and has developed his talents considerably over the
past two seasons.
Luke Noack
Luke is a member of the U14 Terriers and has also been selected
for the VCSA U14 State team. Luke is an example of the fact that
the position of your club team can help you to succeed by teaching
you both team and leadership skills. That dedication and
commitment to his club team not only helps your team mates around
you but has also helped him grow as both a player and a person.
Joris Kerstens
Joris has been selected as an emergency for the VCSA U14 State
team. Joris has been playing soccer for Sherbrooke since the U8's
and has been playing both Saturdays and Sundays for many seasons.
Joris too has experienced those early days in developing teams
where they are often getting flogged but has learned resilience
and determination from that experience. He is now enjoying the
success of the U15 Pythons on a Sunday in which he is an integral
member of the defence.
Round 13
The Seniors faired well
this weekend with all four Mens teams winning and only the Ladies
recording a loss. Saturday was a mixed bag with the unpredictable
U15 Panthers ending their loosing streak by knocking off the
second team Eastern Utd in convincing fashion with 4 goals before
half time. Our best bet at a Premiership will probably be settled
next week when the U13 Sharks play away to Kings SC. The winner
will undoubtably take the league as neither team is likely to
loose one after this match. Sunday was a bad day for Sherbrooke
Juniors with only two teams recording a win.
The U11 Pumas recorded a good win away to Glen Eira in an
excellent team performance. Though they struggled somewhat with
the large pitch when both Brodie and Michael exposed the
opposition with some glorious crosses from the left Justin was
there to slot one home whilst 1st yearer Daniel Jones was cool as
a cucumber to side foot his first goal home. A mix up in the
middle gave away a cheap answer shortly after with Goal Keeper
Theo not impressed. Theo responded in the second half when up
front he broke through the defence only to have is shot blocked.
Fletcher was there following up and slotted home with his left for
his first goal this season. Theo then made up for it with a lovely
header goal and slotted one home on the post to get two for the
day.
Trivia Night
The Trivia Night turned
out to be an outstanding success with over 200 people attending
the event at the Monbulk Community Hall. The event Hosted by Sue
Anne Post and Elisabeth Speller was an extremely enjoyable and
entertaining evening. Thanks to the outstanding Generosity of our
hosts and all the wonderful people and businesses that donated so
many items to our silent auction we were able to raise over $5000.
I can't remember the name of the tables that won as I still can't
believe that I could get the year of the first World Cup wrong!!
A special thank you must go to Alison Cox and Eddie Woischuk for
all the initial organization as well as to Lisa and Trevor Doolan
who made it all come together on the night. There were many others
that contributed and I am sure to miss some but would also like to
thank Wayne Conder, Karen & Chris Job and Sandy Currie for all
their help on the day. A special thank you to everyone that
attended and made it such a great night with such an array of club
people from Juniors through to Seniors.

Seniors Spit Roast
The spit roast for the
senior teams was a relaxing affair and made even more enjoyable by
the fact that the heating has finally been connected. It one of
the few times people have felt too warm at Menzies Creek. A big
thank you to Trevor Doolan for obtaining the donation of the
heater and to Mark Occhipinti and Anthony Bownds for its
installation. The night was extremely well catered for thanks to a
lot of work from Carol Newman, Chris and Karen Job and Rebecca
Occhipinti. There was a good turn out from the Forest, Ladies and
Arrows teams. It was unfortunate from my point of view that the
two new teams Friars and Hoods that were created due to the
increasing demand and in turn have caused the committee
considerable work this season failed to even have 1
representative. Our club is completely manned by volunteers and as
a natural consequence I guess those volunteers will support those
that support the club.
Round 12
The U15 Pythons
continued their improved form with a convincing win over Glen Eira.
The Pythons pressured from the kick off and got close to scoring
early with some good balls from captain Jack Witzke through the
defence and wide to outside midfielders. The three fill ins for
the day all contributed substantially to the excellent performance
starting from a good chip over the top from Jake Trenton that
allowed Josh Woischuk to run on to and loop one over the keeper.
James Lodder then contributed with the second goal after some
great tackles and pressure in the opposition penalty area. The
excellent team work continued resulting in several shots from Josh
Newman who was working very hard on the left to force the
opposition into errors. When the opposition earned a rare corner
the keeper failed to clear his lines and the ball was forced into
the net to make the score 1-2 at half time. Early in the second
half a great effort from Josh W. won the ball and squared back to
young U13 brother Benny to slot home for the Pythons third. This
was excellent team play as the two brothers have a family comp
going on goal scoring so it would have been easy for Josh to take
the shot himself but instead did the right thing by the team.
Several golden opportunities then went begging until Benny grabbed
his second to put the game beyond Glen Eira. It wasn't all one
sided however with Danny learning from the first half and making
two excellent punches off the goal line to save certain goals and
cleaned up several shots below shoulder height with confidence.
The real highlight of the second half was some bone crunching
tackles from Fabbian Benc who timed his tackles to perfection and
after a while frieghtened the opposition in to getting rid of the
ball to quickly. When James chipped in for his second and the
teams fifth the game was over. The Pythons have quietly climbed
the ladder and now find themselves in 3rd position after 4
consecutive wins and with the return of several quality players
next week should continue to cause problems for the opposition.
The U11 Bears had a tough match against the Eastern Lions. In a
well balanced encounter both sides were well organised. The Bears
defense consisting of Adam, Sebastian, Lochie and Nic where
outstanding. No balls bothered Isaac in goal. The midfield with
Ahren, Kane and Liam was solid as always. The two Maxes in attack
and Lawrence together with Tom kept the Lions defense busy.
Especially some beautiful combinations between winger and birthday
boy Max and Kane were a pleasure to watch. The chances were rare.
Shortly before half time the Max2 duo had a fast break,
starting in the middle of the pitch. Next followed what surely was
one of the best goals of the season. Max Gates chipped the keeper
smartly and the ball went in at the far corner of the net. Half
time followed shortly after. The Bears had to sustain some
extended pressure in the second half. Still, the defense including
now Ahren and Liam held firm and the win was achieved. Player of
the Match was Scorer Max G. Well done. The Bears are second on
the ladder, just behind on goal difference.

Winter Clinics
The 3 day clinics were once again an outstanding success with over
130 children attending. Thank you to all the people who helped out
in either the canteen, coaching or refereeing. A special thank you
to the scouts who allowed us the use of their hall during the
Wednesday and Thursday sessions when rain restricted some
activities.
France were the eventual Mini World Cup winners for the Subjuniors
and best boy and girl for the clinic went to Ben Roper and Natalie
Doolan.
Australia won the junior world cup on penalties from Italy who
went through the tournament undefeated but ran out of legs in the
final. Best boy and girl participants went to Ryan Moran and Emily
Scott.

Round 9
The Senior teams all had wins on the Saturday for the first time
this season. The Ladies team eventually run out easy winners over
Glen Eira after a somewhat shaky start. Amber Rowell began to find
her feet upfront and after pressuring the goalkeeper in the
slippery conditions had chances to put the Ladies in front when
miss handling gave her opportunities. One Shot lacked the required
power and was saved on the line by a scrambling goalkeeper whilst
the next, hit a little too hard, flew over the bar. The third
opportunity went wide of the goal and one could be forgiven for
thinking it may be one of those days. The midfield pressured
forward but were failing to get back deep enough once the keeper
had the ball and two very good chances fell to Glen Eira's
strikers when the ball sailed over the midfield into the slippery
mud. The Ladies were fortunate to not go behind when one of these
chances was rocketed just wide of the upright. Eventually the work
rate paid off when Amber broke through and slotted the ball home.
Perri and Stella worked very hard in the middle of the park to get
the ball forward and they were unlucky not to go to half time
further ahead. In the second half the pressure continued and when
Nikki picked up a loose goal keeper clearance she hit the ball
over the defence and into the empty net with a lovely left foot
strike. Kim was working the ball well down the left and several
lovely crosses went a begging from both sides of the field. As the
temperature plummeted a ball into the muddy box bounced away from
the keeper and Amber made no mistake for her second. The final
score three nil and hot milos the order of the day. Next week the
Ladies will need to sure up their defence as they play Nth
Blackburn who are yet to concede a goal but have scored plenty.
The Ladies are certainly capable of scoring against Blackburn but
will have to work very hard to keep them from scoring more.
After two losses
against strong teams and a slide to 4th position on the table, the
U/11 Bears were up against the table-topping Glen Waverley at
Menzies Creek. Despite being down to a single substitute on the
reserves bench, Sherbrooke showed great spirit and teamwork to
emerge from the fog as 3-0 victors. In difficult and muddy
conditions the Bears were lucky not to concede an early goal, new
keeper Isaac continuing his baptism of fire and having to deal
with a large pond of watery mud and an erratically bouncing ball
that just shaved the outside of the post. Luck seemed to be with
the Bears, however, as shortly afterwards Sebastian's speculative
but powerful shot from well outside the penalty box burst through
the Glen Waverly keepers' hands and into the net for a 1-0 lead.
The Bears then began to work well with the conditions, keeping
passes short and clearances long, and Max Rechner and Kane were
both proving a handful for the defence and making many incisive
runs from midfield. Bonnie was also holding her own on the left
wing against a stacked defence while Max Gates, Adam, Nic and
Sebastian proved to be a watertight combination at the back.
Midway though the half good combination between Max R and Ahren
down the right and a superb cross into the centre was met by Tom,
who slammed the ball past the keeper and into the top corner of
the net for 2-0. The second half was dominated by Glen Waverly's
attack, but they were unable to convert opportunities and were
always met by Sherbrooke defenders full of running. Liam, Nic and
Max R in particular ran themselves to a standstill during this
half, but just when it seemed the Bears would tire they were able
to break out and after a good corner kick from Ahren a mix-up at
the back from Glen Waverly saw the ball pop into the net for a
final score of 3-0 and a well-earnt victory for the Bears!

Round 8
The Ladies team got back to their winning ways with a very
determined 2-0 victory against 4th placed Knox. Kicking with a
strong breeze on a very small pitch they pressured hard until a
good corner from Perri Gardner was scrambled in at the near post.
Sensing 1 goal might not to be sufficient with such a strong
breeze they pressured relentlessly for a second but were denied by
both goalkeeper and a little luck. When Tanya Newmans long range
volley came sailing in over the keeper it looked like a second
only to be denied by the upright. Shortly into the second half
Stella Job scored a second and this took the wind out of Knox and
the ladies hung on to win 2-0.
The U11 Pumas clawed their way back into their first muddy game
for the season. Normally seasoned mud specialists Kings actually
played the conditions better early on and a long range shot skided
by the keeper to give them an early lead. The Pumas then fought
back and a series of tremendous crosses from Michael Parks, Brodie
Currie, Justin Lowe and Luke Sproules went begging on the far post
and could easily have put the Pumas in front. With the midfield
not deep enough for the keepers long clearance's eventually a
skiding ball got through the defence to be slotted home by a Kings
attacker. With more of the ball the Pumas continued to attack
until just a few minutes before half time Captain for the day Luke
leading by example headed home on the far post. It would have been
easy to drop their heads when just after the restart failure to
secure the ball in the slippery penalty area allowed Kings a
simple tap in to lead 3-1. The Pumas piled on the pressure in the
very muddy conditions and when rewarded with a scrambled goal in
the penalty area thought they still had a chance. Theo Thomas was
outstanding in the mud and danced around the defence only to be
denied time and again by the Kings goal keeper or see the ball
just past wide of the upright. When Theo broke through and
hammered a ball towards the corner the parents were sure it was
the equalizer but again the best player on the park saved it.
Shortly after in another mud scramble the ball was forced into the net
only to be disallowed. With only seconds to go Brodie somehow got
his foot under the ball and out of the mud to slot the ball into
the far top corner. It was an exceptional goal to match an
exceptional game ending in a 3-3 draw.
The mud was also the downfall of the U16 Bushrangers who lost in
the dying minutes to Boronia 1-2. Despite endless opportunities in
the second half the ball just wouldn't seem to run for the Bushies
who conceeded two goals very unluckily when players on the ball
slipped over. The boys played extremely well and really deserved
something out of the game.
The U16 Girls had a good win The Sparx goals all coming in
the first half Niamh Crosby 2, Jacinta Nagy 1 & Ellen Jones
1. A great effort by all of the team.
Sherbrooke
Rangers U14 Girls Comets put in their best effort for the season,
working really well together as a team. Kara Dunster was almost
the match winner, nearly scoring a goal but hitting the post!! It
was great to see the girls put in a team effort and hope this
continues for the next half of the competition. Final result 0-0
to Hoppers Crossing.
The U/11
Bears met with a well-organised and
physical Croydon Arrows side at Menzies Creek and had their second
loss of the season. Croydon began well, securing an early goal,
before the Bears were able to get into the match with some good
midfield play. Although some chances were created, Sherbrooke
lacked the finishing touches and Croydon's defence stayed secure.
A second goal was conceded late in the half, and although the
Bears were unlucky in that the Croydon scorer appeared clearly
offside, more worrying was the defence of Sherbrooke not getting
back in numbers or quickly enough to support each other. In the
second half Croydon were able to score twice after making clean
breaks from midfield, although Isaac in goal did an excellent job
under pressure (taking over at late notice after the departure of
the Bear's regular goalkeeper). Isaac was able to pull off a
couple of great saves, protecting the Bears from a heavier defeat
than 4-0 and earning the Bears' player of the match award for this
week.

ROUND 7
This round saw some very
disappointing results from some of better performing teams. Our
undefeated U11 Bears lost their first match this season 0-1, the
U15 Pythons were resoundingly defeated by their nemisis Bulleen
2-6 and the Mens Arrows for the forth time this season thrashed
the opposition on the park but lost 1-2. The Mens Forest continued
their winning ways at the top with a 6-2 defeat of Mitcham whilst
the Mens Hoods recovered from last weeks debacle to beat their
main rival Glen Eira 2-1. The Ladies teams winning streak also
ended with a 2-3 loss to Yarra Valley. The U15 Panthers lost 1-2
to Croydon and despite beating the top teams manage to loose games
to the bottom teams in very frustrating fashion. Other reports as
follows:
The U9 Rockets played away
against the North Blackburn Monkeys. I could tell you a tale, that
with only seven players available for our team, the Rockets fought
heroically against the full strength Monkeys. Then again I could
just tell the truth, that the Rockets won 4-0. Alan Damen and
Chris Heckenberg ran a tight defence in the first half and there
were plenty of chances up front for the Rockets. Shaun Allen
started the score, with a tricky, knee based, conversion. Quick
reactions by Isaac Van Rossen in goal kept the sheet clean for us
in the first half. Patrick Walker continued the good work in goal
in the second half. Jordan Dicker worked tirelessly in the mid
field during the whole game, filling up spaces wherever needed,
and Josh Hogben's quick footwork kept the Rockets looking
artistically talented. With the team back into their more
familiar positions it didn't take long for the old "Teamo Supremo"
to score. Yep, Isaac Van Rossen, Chris Heckenberg and Alan Damen
signed up for the last three goals. The last ten minutes there was
concerted effort from the "Teamo Supremo" to set their team
players up for a score, but sadly it didn't eventuate. This was
also due to the Monkeys goalkeeper playing a very good game. So
good that we offered her a transfer to Sherbrooke, but she knocked
us back. To sum it up, the Rockets did us proud; they defended,
they passed, they ran into space, what more can a coach wish for.
Go Rockets!!!

ROUND
6
There was no VCSA games this week
with the exception of the U9 Rangers.
In this catch up game
against Eltham the result was a 3-0 win to The Rangers with Jye
Thompson scoring 2 goals and Liam Smith scoring the other goal.
In the FFV new girls U13 Saphyrz put up a stirling performance at
Emerald to only go down 0-2 to the top team. Goal keeper Leah was
outstanding in the first half. 1st gamer Serice performed very
well with Alexa Allan a stalwart in the middle of the park. The
girls show a lot of promise considering this is the first season
for the majority of the team. The U15 Pythons got back to winning
ways with a crushing 8-1 defeat of Springvale. Hat trick went the
way of Josh Woischuk with 2 goals to Jacco Kerstens and usual left
back Jake Micheals delighted to move up front and score 2. The
single goal going to Mark Howard.
After a minor hiccup involving a last minute-change of
venue, the Bears arrived at Ashburton full of enthusiasm and
confidence. This translated into a strong first
half-performance featuring four excellent goals. Ashburton
mounted a solid and sustained defence and some probing
attack for the first ten minutes, but then the Bears seemed
to step up a gear. An individual break up the right wing
from the ever-elusive Zac, who crossed into the centre for
Max R to shoot, resulted in a goal to Nic who helped the
ball over the line. Shortly afterwards a perfectly weighted
corner from Mason was slammed home by Zac from the edge of
the penalty box. Liam followed suit with another excellent
strike, and when Sebastian first hit the crossbar with one
shot and then made no mistake a few moments later the Bears
had scored 4 goals in less than ten minutes.
The pick of the players in the first half was undoubtedly Ahren,
whose calm and cool distribution and incisive running from
midfield fed the goalscorers up front. The second pair of
twins (Lawrence and Tom)
also played strongly whilst Bonnie and

ROUND 5
Senior teams all performed
exceptionally well over the weekend recording 4 wins and a draw.
The Ladies continued there winning streak after defeating there
former nemisis Mitcham 2-1 at Emerald. Karen Ceeney and Kim Bayly
getting amongst the goals. Needless to say the smiles on the
Ladies face are a feature at our club at present. The Hoods
continued to demolish all comers by trouncing Yarra Valley 14-1.
Even coach Mick Terry scored twice and he is still coming to grips
with the fact they dont play wingers like Danny Blanchflower any
more !! Discipline will be the only spanner that can clag their
works. The Friars also won in convincing fashion though the score
didn't reflect the play eventually winning 2-1. The Forest won a
very fast and tough encounter with Glen Eira 2-1. The game was
fast and furious from end to end and when the Forest missed a
penalty in the first half it seemed the opportunity may have been
missed. In the second half the speed and control of Pete Strajner
finally won out with two lovely goals seemingly putting Forest
home after Glen Eira seemed to fall into that hole of constant
complaint to the referee. However the second goal seemed to get
them past their lack of discipline and they responded with a
cracking headed goal on the near post to make it only 1 goal the
difference. It was an unusual lack of organization on the back
post from Sherbrooke. This inspired Glen Eira and when a long
range crack from the left went over the keeper most thought the
game had been equalized though it crashed into the cross bar and
rebounded away. The Mens Arrows also performed exceptionally well
scoring a 2-2 draw with undefeated SHACS. They were unlucky not to
win when after equalizing 1-1 pounded the goal for the next 10
minutes without reward. Luck then played its part when a slip from
the goal keeper gave the ball straight to the opposition to place
in an empty net. This was countered 5 minutes later when an Arrows
corner was miss kicked by a defender into his own net. 2-2 a fair
result in the end.

ROUND 4
The U11 Power claimed top
spot on the ladder thanks to an emphatic 7-0 win over Eltham.
Power dominated from the kick off with Ewen Doonan and Joel Turpin
controlling the midfield and pushing the ball wide for Jordy
Preston and Riley Scott attacking down the flanks.Jordy scored the
1st goal after 4 minutes cutting inside 2 defenders and slamming
home from the edge of the box. Mason Scott and Hollie Kerry both
came close before Joel got the powers 2nd and third. Man of match
Alex Murray setting up both goals before helping himself to a
cracker from the just inside the area. A lot of postional changes
at half time ensured everyone got a run on the ball, with Jamie
Gilbert hunt putting his hand up for goalie and not getting a
touch of the ball. Sam Raper controlled the game in the 2nd half
sending us forward again and again with Max Collins adding a new
dimension in midfield,it wasn't long before Ewen added to the
score and JT claimed his hattrick and then Mason scored with his
left. Eden Trickey came very close to grabbing his first for the
club after some clever build up involving Max Gates and Rhys
Curukovski.
The U9 Rockets had a 3-0
win at home against the North Blackburn Jedis. Chris Heckenberg,
Alan Damen and Isaac Van Rossen were the goalscorers benefitting
from solid teamwork. The positional play of the U9 Rockets is
making their parents proud and is way above their age level. There
is also room for individual performances though; Isaac Willcox
surprised everybody by repeatedly taking on and dribbling through
the Jedi defence and Patrick Walker did a good job of man-marking
a dangerous Jedi forward. Well done Rockets!!!
The
U11 Bears started the game against the equally unbeaten North
Caulfield at high speed. The team took the lesson from the last
game by heart and tackled, passed and ran at a furious pace.
Chances came and were wasted. North Caulfield nearly scored on a
counter attack. Only a fantastic parade by Keeper Jake prevented
their lead. At half time it was still 0-0. The second half was in
the same mould. Zac had a couple of chances and the twins Kane,
Ahren and Sebastian worked hard in the midfield. Bonnie had a
great game and was often involved in the attacks. The defence was
rarely tested, but was always there when needed. Kane got himself
in a good position a few minutes before the end and released a
cracker. A slight deflection left the keeper stranded and the well
deserved 1-0 win was celebrated. Players of the match were Bonnie
and Jake. The whole team deserved an award and are after this
weekend TOP OF THE TABLE.

ROUND 3
The U13 Stingrays first week up had the un-enviable task of travelling to Strathmore, to play the Kings SC. Apparently there was no space in the Albury league, so they play in ours despite the travel. So we get there after leaving in the dark, and they are a crack outfit as well. Things can only get better from there and they did. Despite still being half asleep, and facing very stiff opposition, we only went down 5-0. We grafted our way back into the match and played a tight 0-2 second half the boys should be proud of. Alex Webb in goals was the difference between 5 & 10. Justin Williams, Jacob Maloney & Kirk Bullock were all gallant in defence. So this week I asked that the team put that result behind them and bounce back. Healesville are a strong team that we have beaten only once in 7 or 8 games, but that was the last time, and we continue to grow as a team. At home in Menzies Creek and now in game mode, The Stingrays bounced out of the blocks. We have been concentrating on position & pressure at training and the boys really showed the value of a full turn out to every training run. Healesville had there chances, but if a backs didn't stop them, Alex was outstanding in goals, pulling off one of the saves of the year, amongst saves he now makes look easy. After a sustained period of pressure the ball was lofted across the area by Nathan Grover to find Daniel Matic in space. Daniel left nothing on his boot to find the net and we were up 1-0. This was the halftime score with both sides squandering chances late in the second half. After oranges the Stingrays bounced out again and had the Healesville team under the hammer. Then came the goal that makes years of coaching worthwhile. A great tackle down back. A strong clearance wide. A clever touch to a running flanker. A beautiful cross to the box. And a sprinting forward tucking the ball in the net off the head. Brings tears to a coaches eyes... Up 2-0 the boys took the foot off the pedal a little and let Healesville in with a sniff. When good sides are given a sniff they take it and we were at 2-1 with 10 minutes to go. All our backs were tired but defending stoutly, and up front we just needed a spark. Lachy Webb stepped up and with 3 beautiful touches with the ball off the ground gave himself enough room & time to have a snap at goal from outside the box. Looping over the goalies head, this was a match winner worth the price of admission to see. So we are 1 & 1 after 2 weeks and head to Croydon to take on the competition battlers next week.

START OF THE 2007 SEASON
The season had an unusual start
with many of the teams expected to do well not performing whilst
many of previous seasons under performers making amends. All
senior teams lost with the exception of the Hoods who won on
forfeit. The inaugural games at Emerald were a delight with the
ground looking tremendous and all the girls teams thoroughly
emjoying the lovely day. A few match reports follow.
